Grace Comes as a Transfer, Not Only Through Books

Deuteronomy 34:9

Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. Wisdom does not come only from reading; plenty of well-read people remain foolish. Wisdom can come as a transfer, an impartation from one vessel to another, and wisdom is ultimately known by its fruit. When results follow a life, that is evidence that wisdom is powering them.

2 Corinthians 1:15 (Paul's desire to impart)

Paul told the believers he longed to come to them so he could impart a necessary gift, to the end that they would be established. Without impartation, there is no establishment. God, in preserving humility within the body of Christ, has chosen to route much of his grace through people. To reject the vessel is often, in practice, to reject the grace that would have come through that vessel.

Stand on the Shoulders of the Ones Who Went Before

There is an old saying passed down in ministry: "I have laid the foundation, I have swept the ground, stand on my shoulder and touch what I could not touch." A person who suffers the exact same hardship their father already suffered and already broke through has not honored that sacrifice; they have wasted it. If someone has already died for a debt, going back to try to pay it again from the beginning is not devotion, it is foolishness. The right response to those who labored, wept, and broke ground before you is to receive what they secured and continue the journey from where they stopped, not to start over as though nothing had been done.

Grace to Abide

1 Samuel 22:1-2

David gathered around him everyone in distress, everyone in debt, and everyone discontented. About four hundred men joined him in that condition.

2 Samuel 23:8

Later, scripture lists the same men not as the distressed and discontented, but as "the mighty men whom David had." What changed them was not a single event but abiding: they stayed with David as he marched forward, and in staying, they became mighty.

Building According to Pattern

Throughout scripture, whenever God calls someone to build something for him, he gives a pattern, and he expects that pattern to be followed precisely.

Genesis 6:14-16, 22

Noah was given exact dimensions for the ark: three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, thirty cubits high, not a cubit more or less, and scripture records that Noah did according to all that God commanded him. Attention is often paid only to the miracle, the animals following him into the ark, without noticing the process behind it: diligent obedience to a divine pattern, followed exactly, is what allowed the rest to unfold without struggle.

Exodus 25:9, 40

Moses received the same kind of precision for the tabernacle, down to the material for every vessel, and was told, "see that thou make them after their pattern which was shown thee."

Exodus 40:33-36

When the work was finished exactly as instructed, the cloud covered the tabernacle and the glory of the Lord filled it, so completely that Moses himself could not enter. Wherever the pattern is followed with precision, the glory of the Lord tends to come and rest on the work, and the work becomes easier to carry. Where the pattern is abandoned, the glory is missing, and every step has to be forced by human effort alone. Even Israel's movement afterward was governed entirely by that same presence: when the cloud lifted, they moved; when it stayed, they stayed, even if it meant waiting a year. No argument, no independent decision-making apart from what the presence was doing.

It is worth remembering that the promise God gave to Israel as a whole, that he would bring them into the land, was not automatically the experience of every individual Israelite. Of the generation that received that promise, only two actually entered the land. God's corporate word over a work does not replace the personal obedience each individual still has to walk out.

Obedience to Instructions That Don't Make Sense

Joshua 6

Israel was told to march silently around Jericho once a day for six days, then seven times on the seventh day, before finally shouting. The instruction stripped them of any natural strategy or strength of their own, so that when the walls fell, the glory could only belong to God.

John 2:5

At the wedding in Cana, Mary's instruction to the servants was simple: "whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." Jesus told them to fill stone jars with water and then serve it as though it were wine, an instruction that made no natural sense until the water had already become wine in the serving. Each time an instruction from God is obeyed even when it does not make logical sense, the pattern is strengthened, and the person walking in it rises above natural wisdom into a realm the world cannot fully trace or explain.

The Pattern Is Both Personal and Corporate

Every individual carries a pattern for their own life, in the same way a building carries an architect's blueprint. Just as one should not move a door where a window belongs, changing the design God has laid out for a life, avoiding the assignment or trying to force a shortcut, usually creates confusion and hardship that was never meant to exist. When a life or a work is built according to the pattern God actually gave, the load becomes lighter, direction comes more easily, and what looked impossible in natural terms and finances resolves without needing to be forced.

Diligent obedience to the voice of the Lord, walking neither to the left nor to the right of what he has spoken, is what positions a life or a work to be set apart for what it was truly built to become.
