Jesus Wept

John 11:35. Two words carry an entire revelation: Jesus wept. Some scriptures are studied and skimmed over because they cannot be fully understood at first glance. For a long time this verse was left exactly as it reads, until a question began to rise up on the inside: why would Jesus weep? He has power to raise the dead. He is the resurrection and the life. He is the one who sits upon the throne, whose eyes are like flames of fire, the Lamb of God with seven eyes, the one who laid the foundation of the earth and said it should not be removed. He is omnipotent. Why would he weep?

The Lord began to open my eyes to the workings of that story, and I began to understand, one by one, why he wept. It was not because he was powerless or lacked the anointing. He went there even while the man was already rotting in the grave.

Those Who Stood Close Are Not Always the Problem

Mary and Martha were so close to Jesus that he would dine in their house. No matter how close you are to Jesus, you will be tempted. No matter your intimacy, you will be challenged. No matter your proximity to God, there is something about him: anytime he intends a new level for you, he opens a battle around it. There is no mantle without a battle attached to it.

Hebrews 12:6. Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth. Whom the Lord loveth, he pampers, he helps, he comforts, but he also chastises. That is the correlation between love and correction. God wants to see the intentions of your heart, whether you love him for who he is and not only for what he can do.

  • Men of true intimacy do not have prayer points, they have love points. There is a point where you are no longer asking God for things, you are simply worshiping him because you are tired of asking.

Reason One: Jesus Wept at the Ignorance of Man Over the Workings of God

John 11:21 and John 11:32. Both Martha and Mary said the same thing to Jesus: "If thou had been here, my brother would not have died." Look at the irony in John 11:15. One woman was praying for him to come, and because of another purpose, he did not go. He said, in effect, because of you I will not show up, so that the case will get critical and you will understand my power. Meanwhile, someone else was crying.

  • One believer's trial is another believer's strength. One believer's pain is another believer's lesson.
  • If there was no trial for Job, we would not know that a man can bounce back. It was not easy for Job. What can be explained in five minutes took Job nine months.
  • If there was no Goliath, we could not believe that with just a sling and a stone a man could go down. It was not easy for David.
  • If Peter had not been arrested and kept in prison, we would not be aware that an automatic door is not a modern invention. There was an automatic door in scripture, and the gate opened of its own accord.

Sometimes you are asking God questions and asking for answers, and nothing seems to be happening. It is as though he is taking his time, because God wants another believer to be aware of your trial, aware of your pain, so that when the glory comes there will be people who can stand and say, "I am a witness."

I never took Daniel through the lion's den to prove to Daniel that I am God. He already knew. I took Daniel through it to prove it to the lions, to the prison, not to Peter, to prove it to them. The Bible says that without us, the disciples and apostles who came before us will not be made perfect. They, without us, will not be made complete. Paul is standing on the grandstand watching you as a child of God. You are about to give up, but he says, "I did not lay the foundation for you to give up. Stand therefore, having done all, to stand."

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones, not one shall be broken. This is not the end of you. No matter the evil conspiracy, you are coming out.

Reason Two: Jesus Wept at the Deceitfulness of the Human Heart

John 11:33. Jesus was troubled. People were crying, and Jesus was troubled. I expected to hear that he was moved, but he was troubled. In John 11:46-47, some of those same people who had been crying went straight to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done, and the chief priests and Pharisees gathered a council to plot against him. The same people that were crying left there and went to conspire.

Jesus was troubled seeing the deceitfulness of the human heart. You can cry with someone and still have a different agenda. Your eyes will be opened to see the intentions of men. White teeth is not the same as a white heart.

  • A young lady in a choir was seen holding hands with a man she introduced only as being "in the choir." A year later he was revealed to be her pastor, and it was discovered she had been living with him under false pretenses; she was later found paralyzed in a house in Lagos after trusting the wrong person.
  • A woman insisted her driver be dismissed. Two weeks later that same driver killed her, and it became a story that circulated widely on social media.
  • A man facing a court case did not know his own wife had been paid to testify against him until the day she stood as the state's witness. They had slept in the same bed the night before she betrayed him in court.

The heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked. Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9. You can be married thirty years and still not know the person you married. This is why the greatest gift of the Spirit is not miracles, wonders, or prophecy, it is discernment. That is why you must pray daily for discernment.

Jesus told Simon, "Simon, Simon, Satan has desired to have you, that he might sift you as wheat." Simon was around, but he was not aware. He was passionate but did not know it was Satan's project. Lord, open my eyes to see the hearts of men. The God that sees in secret will expose every attack openly.

He Calls Us by Name

When Jesus came to the grave and rolled away the stone, he was specific: he said, "Lazarus, come forth." If he had simply said, "Come forth," everyone dead would have risen. He called a name because his purpose was specific.

I call forth anything dead around you: dead business, comfort. Dead finances, comfort. Health, comfort. Afflictions, comfort. Anything taken from you, restored. Open doors. Increase. Enlargement. Expansion. Dominion. Elevation. Promotion. Ascension. Acceleration.

Closing Prayer

  • Father, thank you for grace and glory and for remembrance. Let this be our own testimony, double for double.
  • Everything that matters to you, that was taken from you over the years, we command it to come: comfort, ascension, progression, expansion, acceleration, new beginning, progress, in the name of Jesus.
  • Whatever cost you your rest today, we lay it to rest. Whatever has stolen your peace, we command it to rest.
  • We exercise dominion over infirmity. The God who has healed others in this meeting, heal you now.

You are not a question, you are an answer. You are not at the bottom, you are at the top. God is on your side. Power is on your side. Glory is on your side.

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
