The greatest gift: the life of God

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus came that we may have life, and have it more abundantly. Of all the gifts believers receive in Christ - peace, reconciliation, righteousness - the greatest is life, and every reality connected to it. The ministry of life is really the Holy Spirit's assignment, carried out through the believer.

2 Corinthians 3:5-6, Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 15:45, 1 John 4:17

  • Our sufficiency is of God, who made us able ministers of the New Testament - not of the letter, but of the Spirit, because the letter kills but the Spirit gives life.
  • The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in believers and quickens their mortal bodies.
  • The first Adam was a living soul; the last Adam, Jesus, is a life-giving spirit. As He is, so are we in this world - believers are life-giving spirits.

Life, biblically, is more than existence or biology - it is the summation of everything that upgrades a person to reflect the fullness of God in experience. Healing is life. Deliverance is life. Breakthrough is life. Prosperity is life. Restoration is life.

God's desire: dominion, purpose, fellowship, joy

Genesis 1:26

God desires His people to walk in the reality of dominion, purpose, fellowship, and joy.

  • Dominion - authority, sovereign power over the vicissitudes of life. This was God's original idea for man and it hasn't changed.
  • Purpose - our greatest purpose is revealing Jesus through our lives.
  • Fellowship - communion with God and with one another (the word "koinonia" behind fellowship means participation, sharing together in the Holy Ghost).
  • Joy - the Bible speaks extensively about joy's role in a believer's excelling; when joy is bankrupt, many things go wrong. Ask, that your joy may be full.

Because God desires these things for His people, He is more than willing to intervene and provide supernatural solutions to whatever distracts from them - darkness, sickness, poverty, family crisis are all distractions He is willing to remove.

Four things to check when the word of God seems to fail

It is possible, in spite of the goodness of God, for His word to seem not to produce in your life. There are four areas to check for diagnosis.

  1. Your desires versus the will of God

The power of God only moves in the direction of the will of God. Scripture's "whatsoever ye desire" is not a blank check detached from His will - it is spoken to a people already enlightened to His will. You can attract things to your life outside God's will through diligence, lust, or fear, but there is no insurance on it - it was not God's will for Lot to go to Sodom, and it was God who eventually brought him out. The fact that you are moving does not mean God is the one moving you; verify the source of the motion.

    • Three ways to discern the will of God: the written Word, the revelatory ministry of the Holy Spirit, and the prophetic.

  2. Divine timing

    Psalm 102:13, Acts 2:1, Galatians 4:1-2

Timing is as powerful as purpose. God did not suddenly become powerful on the day He arose for Zion - the set time had simply come. The Holy Ghost was always on earth, but even after the resurrection He did not rest on the disciples until the day of Pentecost was fully come. A child, though heir of everything, is no different from a slave until the time appointed by the father, and is kept under tutors and governors until then. When you know something is God's will but not yet His time, you can give thanks while you wait.

  3. The obedience of faith

    Hebrews 4:1-3

There is always a participatory role for the believer - the word preached profits nothing if it is not mixed with faith and obedience in the hearer. You can be conscious of God's will and His timing and still walk away from a meeting not healed, not delivered, because you never engaged by obedience. Engaging sometimes requires receiving a specific strategy or instruction from God and acting on it.

  4. Demonic hindrance - the need for warfare

    Ephesians 6:16, 1 Peter 5:8

Satan actively wages war against the operation of the word of God in a life. Believers are told to be sober and vigilant, to resist the devil so he will flee. Resisting is not simply saying "Satan, leave me alone" - it is engaging the word of God by faith: pleading the blood, speaking the name, declaring the word.

You must agree with what God has said

The word "amen" means I agree, I align, let it be so in my life. When God says a person is healed or lifted and they stay silent, the assumption is disagreement, and the word cannot impose itself where it isn't received. It is the spirit and the bride - the Spirit says you are lifted, but the bride must say, "I agree, I am lifted." God can say salvation is available, but a person can still refuse to receive it, and He will respect that choice.

Lambano: take what is general and make it personal

The Greek word behind "receive" is lambano - to take what is general and make it your own, the way a buffet is set out for everyone but each person fills their own plate. Healing, deliverance, and every promise are set out for all, but must be personally taken by faith. All things are yours - don't choose deliverance and leave healing, don't choose healing and leave lifting. Put your faith to work; believe His promises.

1 John 5:4, John 11:40, 2 Chronicles 20:20

If you will believe, you will see the glory of God. Believe in the Lord your God, so shall you be established; believe His prophets, so shall you prosper - prosper here meaning to advance, to go forward, not merely money.

The greatest enemy of the anointing is familiarity

Not just familiarity with God, but familiarity with the process that leads to receiving from Him. You can't get too used to a working process to stop trusting it - the same way eating has always been the way to receive food since infancy, and will remain so. No formula will ever replace faith, wisdom, the power of God, or simple obedience.

The hand of the Lord is not revealed to everyone merely because of need - it is revealed to those who are hungry, desperate, and ready for change.

Three things to remember about deliverance from generational idolatry

When ministering to those from families of idol worship or witchcraft, over 95% of those who became mediums or drew their families into these practices did so innocently, out of ignorance, pressure, or the context they were born into - not out of deliberate wickedness.

  1. What is happening is an appropriation system - taking hold of what is already finished in Christ and making it a present experience.
  2. This is not an exercise in labeling people or families as evil. Look at those still caught in these things through the lens of compassion, not hatred - the proof of enlightenment is love, not just transformation.
  3. Judgment only happens in the presence of rebellion, not ignorance. The real culprit is not a parent, sibling, or ancestor - it is the devil. If they have yielded to him, pray for their salvation rather than despising them.

Deliverance is part of the same grace package as healing and salvation - Christ has already paid the price, but it must be engaged and appropriated by faith to be made good in a person's life.

Renouncing family altars and ancestral covenants

Liberty is already yours in Christ, but it takes obedience and engaging by faith to appropriate it. If you are connected to a family altar of idol worship or an ancestral covenant, renounce it by the blood of Jesus.

  • Father, in the name of Jesus, I establish and I walk in the experience of total liberty from every form of oppression.
  • I decree and declare every ordinance and every altar connecting me to darkness, connecting me to ancestry, is over by the blood of Jesus.
  • Restore everything that was lost, everything that was stolen.
  • I believe. I believe it will come to pass.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
