The Principle of Appropriation

The only real path to spiritual growth and development in a believer is what is theologically called appropriation. Appropriation of positional truth simply means taking a portion of what already belongs to you and setting it aside for practical use.

If you have ten million in the account and want to buy something worth five hundred thousand, you appropriate five hundred thousand out of the ten million to purchase it. The Christian walk works the same way. You have unsearchable riches in Christ, and as demands arise in the body and in circumstances, you appropriate what is already set aside for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 1:3-4

Believers have been begotten again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus, to an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, that fades not away, reserved in heaven. That inheritance does not fade and is not subject to change or decay. Spiritual growth is that inheritance becoming visible in the soul, the body, and the circumstances. The inheritance is your position; the demand is made in the condition of your life; you take a portion of the inheritance to meet the demand, and that is how spiritual growth happens.

This is the difference between believers and unbelievers when situations arise: believers face the situation with thanksgiving and the sacrifice of praise, acknowledging what they already have before the situation ever appeared. The situation has only come to give an opportunity to demonstrate the glory of God in mortal flesh, that Gentiles may come to your light and kings to the brightness of your rising.

The Christian is a partaker of the divine nature of God. Within the person is the divine nature; outside is the humanity. 2 Corinthians 4:7 calls this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. Peter called it the hidden man of the heart, the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit which is of great price in the sight of God, not corruptible.

Holding Fast Your Confession

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast our profession of faith without wavering, for faithful is he that promised. The word "profession" comes from a Greek word meaning "to say the same thing" — homologia. To hold fast your profession is to keep saying the same thing God has said, a continuous confession.

• Hebrews 8:6 — Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry, being a mediator of a better covenant established on better promises.

• 2 Peter 1:4 — Exceeding great and precious promises are given so that by them we might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world through lust.

There is no way those promises are fulfilled without a person partaking of the divinity of God that stands behind them. When a task or promise before you is humanly impossible, and it is nonetheless fulfilled, that person has partaken of a nature that is not human — the way people are startled by someone operating far beyond their natural years or experience. That is metamorphosis, a person transformed by the renewing of the mind, now interacting with the divine nature so that what was impossible in the flesh comes to pass.

Hebrews 3:14

We are made partakers of Christ if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence — our confession — steadfast to the end.

Hebrews 3:1

Believers are called to consider Jesus as the Apostle and High Priest of our profession — the High Priest over our confession, over the words that say the same thing God has said.

Jesus as High Priest of Our Confession

Consider someone walking through the valley of the shadow of death, a threatening situation. If they are murmuring and complaining, they are not enacting the high priestly ministry of Jesus. But if that person holds fast their profession — declaring "The Lord is my shepherd, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil" — they have a fearless, bold confession of God's word.

The High Priest takes the sacrifices of the people into the inner court and presents them to God. When declarations are made in line with God's word, Jesus takes those words to the Father as the basis for what is prayed in His name. If a person is saying negative things, murmuring, and joining others in fear and complaint, then even ending a prayer with "in Jesus' name" does not mean they are praying in the name of Jesus — because the name carries the office, and their words have not represented that office.

• Matthew 10:33 — Whoever denies Jesus before men, He will deny before the Father in heaven.
• 1 Timothy 2:5 — There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Numbers 14:27-34

When the children of Israel murmured against God after the report of the spies, God said, "As you have spoken in my ears, so will I do unto you." Their carcasses fell in the wilderness and their children wandered forty years — not because it was His will, but because of what they kept saying. Doubt and murmuring, spoken consistently, became what was established over their lives, while Caleb and Joshua, who spoke differently, entered the land.

Hebrews 6

God confirmed His promise by an oath, by two immutable things, because an oath is the end of all strife — showing the heirs of promise the unchangeableness of His counsel.

John 15:7

If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you. Abiding words are words spoken consistently — remaining, not changing because of what anyone else is saying.

Confessing the Promises

Hebrews 9:11

Christ has become High Priest of good things to come — by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands. He is High Priest over the good things that are still to come, so those good things must be declared.

Psalm 103:5 and Isaiah 40:31

God satisfies the mouth with good things so that youth is renewed like the eagle's. Those who wait upon the Lord — who keep speaking forth His word — shall renew their strength, mount up with wings as eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint, even while the young grow weary and utterly fall.

The eagle was one of the four faces associated with Jesus in the gospels — the lion (king), the ox (servant), the man (Luke), and the eagle, representing divinity, the Gospel of John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." That word is meant to be on the believer's own lips. When it is, the divine nature begins to manifest and the trajectory of that life changes — sometimes suddenly, after a long season of consistent confession.

Awake to Righteousness

• 1 Corinthians 15:34 — Awake to righteousness, and sin not.
• Isaiah 52:1 — Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments.
• Ephesians 4:24 — Put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Putting on righteousness — awaking to who you already are in Christ — is how sin is stopped, not by struggling against it directly. "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world" is a truth to be put on and worn constantly. Abiding in Christ as the vine, with Him supplying the life-sap through the Holy Spirit, becomes the believer's whole worldview.

How Truth Becomes Real

Things become real in a person's life in this order: first hearing, then acceptance, then declaration. A person may hear the gospel many times before a particular day when it is accepted — because the Holy Spirit reveals something personally from what was heard, and that revelation is what leads to belief and then to confession.

Elisha prayed the exact right prayer for his servant: not "God save him," but "Lord, open his eyes" — because the provision was already there, and once the servant's eyes were opened, he could see it. In the same way, the woman with the issue of blood heard about Jesus and something was stirred in her by the Holy Spirit that led her to press through the crowd, even though others who heard the same reports about Jesus did not come to the same conclusion.

2 Corinthians 5:17

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things have passed away, and all things have become new — and all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation.

The Promises Made to Abraham Are Yours

Galatians 3:16, 29

The promises were made to Abraham and to his seed — not "seeds," as of many, but "seed," as of one, which is Christ. If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and every promise God made to Abraham is yours to confess into your life.

Genesis 17:6-8

• "I will make thee exceeding fruitful" — every child you have is destined to succeed in life; these are confessions to be made over them.
• "I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee" — in business, this speaks of raising up people of influence and authority.
• "I will establish my covenant between me and thee... to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee."
• "I will give unto thee, and thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger" — in whatever land you are a stranger, you are destined to become a possessor, the way Joseph became a ruler in a foreign land as a stranger.

Jesus looked at a woman bound for eighteen years and called her a daughter of Abraham — asking how she could remain in that state. She was in that condition because she did not know her inheritance.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we thank you for your word. By the power of your Spirit, establish us in this truth. Let it take deep root in our consciousness and bring forth massive fruit in our lives, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
