Tongues: The Gateway, Not the Purpose

We can't exhaust the curriculum for prayer in a single month, we could face the subject for an entire year and still not be done. You learn how to pray by praying. No matter what school of prayer you attend, you actually learn to pray by praying, you can watch and observe, but you only grow through practice.

This morning's focus is tongues as the gateway to the supernatural, building on Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 14:2, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, Jude 1:20, and Romans 8:26-27.

Acts 1:8 says ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses both in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria. Notice it does not say you will receive tongues. The initial evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit is tongues, but it is not the ultimate purpose. The purpose of the Holy Ghost is power. Tongues is only the indicator that the Holy Ghost is present, the way a small light on a microphone indicates the microphone is switched on, but the purpose of the microphone is to amplify the voice, not to show a light. Tongues is the gateway into that world of power.

1 Corinthians 14:2 says he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God, for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. When your life is faced with mysteries, you combat mysteries with mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 says, if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. Notice the word "will," it is an indicator of will and decision, not a feeling. You are not forced to pray, you decide to pray. The reason some people are not yet praying in the Holy Ghost is that they are waiting to be forced into it, waiting for the Holy Ghost to tear open their mouths, but it doesn't happen that way, you are the one who begins.

There is no accent in tongues. It is not supposed to sound the way anyone else's tongues sound, and just as with any language, you grow more fluent the more you speak in tongues. Paul described two extremes: some believers never pray with the understanding at all, often because they are mentally lazy, they have no word of God in their spirit and so they have nothing to say, and they come into God's presence thoughtlessly, defaulting only to tongues. Others rely only on understanding. Paul modeled both, I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also, and he went further to say he would sing in the spirit as well. You should learn to worship God in the spirit too.

A Prophetic Word: Dry Bones Coming Together

There was a lady who came to a meeting with multiple fibroids in her stomach, about five or six of them. During ministration, everything that the heavenly Father had not planted in her body was declared uprooted in the name of Jesus. She went back to the hospital afterward, and the doctors could no longer find the fibroids, because everything God did not implant will be rooted out.
