The Picture of a Family Before the Enemy Came

Genesis 2:7-25 — God formed man from the dust, breathed life into him, planted a garden eastward in Eden, and placed him there to dress and keep it. Seeing that it was not good for man to be alone, He formed woman from man's rib and brought her to him, and "they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed." This is the picture of a family already standing in its breakthrough — before the enemy ever showed up to scatter it in chapter three. Whenever you wonder what a family according to God's original design should look like, this is the reference point: complete, unashamed, and already provided for, before anything went wrong.

A Home Needs Boundaries, Not Just Provision

1 Corinthians 10:23 — "all things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient." Having the money to buy something doesn't obligate you to buy it every time. Apostle Paul said he learned both how to abound and how to be abased — that's a boundary, deliberately practiced. A home without boundaries is a home where a father returns home intoxicated and speaks however he wants, where children come and go at will, where siblings lie to each other and a mother teaches them how to lie to their own father. He that lives in pleasure without restraint is described in scripture as already dead while still alive.

Boundaries have to be spoken plainly and enforced consistently: "We don't talk like this in this house." "We don't use those words here." If you tell a child what the consequence will be for repeating something, follow through on it — a boundary that isn't enforced isn't actually a boundary.

A Personal Story: Learning to Handle Provocation

Growing up, a boy in the neighborhood repeatedly harassed and threw objects, until one day, provoked past his limit, a fight broke out that ended with the other boy fleeing home in tears. Word spread quickly through the street, and rather than being pulled into further confrontation or public defense of the incident, the response at home was simply: wipe your face, and go to church. Sometimes the most powerful response to provocation isn't more provocation — it's refusing to let someone else's behavior dictate where you spend your energy next.

Money Is for the Family, Not Just One Spouse

"My money is my money, your money is our money" is not a partnership — it's a warning sign. A husband's role isn't to control or direct his wife as though she answers only to him — it's to help her find direction, to support her in prayer, and to support her financially as a partner rather than a gatekeeper. 1 Timothy 5:8 — anyone who does not provide for their own household has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. A wife is a husband's pride, not his subordinate — and any financial structure in the home that quietly treats her as less than an equal partner needs to be re-examined.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
