Avoid Bitterness
The topic of the seeds of destiny this message addresses is: avoid bitterness. The Bible tells us in James 3:11-12: does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? Either a vine figs? So can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh?
No one can harbor bitterness and accommodate loveliness at the same time. It is not possible to be a bitter personality and a sweet personality simultaneously. The bitterness will definitely corrupt the sweetness.
There is a transfer of aggression that happens when a man shouts on his wife until she becomes so agitated that she transfers the aggression on the children. The bitterness does not stop at the source. It flows wherever there is a trigger.
Bitterness and unforgiveness will facilitate and enhance loveless living. A young lady who has been disappointed or jilted by a brutal and heartless man who ate her food, borrowed her money, and then abandoned her for another girl — she becomes bitter not just against that man. She also becomes bitter against any other genuine man that comes with clear and better intentions toward her. The bitterness corrupted her sweetness. A person who used to be an exciting and charming young lady is now tense, agitated, and aggressive.
What Bitterness Cost Joab
Remember what David told Solomon in 1 Kings 2:5-6 (paraphrased): see this Joab? Don't let his gray head go to the grave in peace because he shed the blood of innocents in the time of war. He shed the blood of war in the time of peace.
That is what bitterness cost Joab. The war had ended. People had died on both sides, but he was still holding the issues of the war against somebody. And when the war was over, he killed that person — not in war, but in peacetime. It ought not to be so.
The challenge facing the world today is the bankruptcy of love. No one can harbor bitterness and accommodate loveliness at the same time.
Two Assignments
- Make up your mind never to harbor hate and bitterness toward people.
- Anything that makes you bitter toward people is not in the interest of your life and destiny — avoid it.
Bitterness does not only affect time here on earth — it affects eternity. You cannot enter heaven with bitterness harbored in your heart. You cannot really succeed to the extent you should when bitterness beclouds you. Every time we fail to forgive, we are asking God to hold our guilt against us — to hold our iniquities against us.
Father, I come before You today. I receive the grace to release every offender in the name of Jesus. Help me, Lord, to release the offenders in the name of Jesus. I am sorry for every way I held on to offense. I release them so I can release myself and release my destiny in the name of Jesus. Thank You, Lord, for hearing me and for answering in Jesus' precious name. Amen.
I pray for you today and declare health from above and mercy from above be your portion. Everything that is tied down around your life because of unforgiveness — I declare them loose immediately. Be released in Jesus' precious name. Amen.
