Three Questions Behind an Impactful Life

The value of a life is not measured by its duration or by the size of its possessions. It is tied to a person's alignment with God's purpose on the earth. Three questions must be answered for that kind of life to be possible.

Daniel 11:32

"They that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits." Not everyone lives an impactful existence, because not everyone comes into a deep, experiential knowledge of God. This goes beyond church dogma into an actual encounter that redefines a person's existence.

John 17:3

Jesus himself defined eternal life as knowing God and the one he sent. A person can be breathing, yet if they do not know God, their existence remains insignificant in the realm that matters.

2 Corinthians 3:18

The second question is the question of identity. Scripture says that beholding the glory of the Lord with an unveiled face changes a person, using the Greek word for metamorphosis, the same transformation that turns a wingless creature into something that flies. The depth of a person's knowledge of God is the trigger for this transformation; the more God is known, the more a person begins to rediscover who they actually are, beyond how they are defined by nationality, circumstance, or the opinions of others.

Jeremiah 1:5

The third question is purpose. Before a person was formed in the womb, they were already known, and a unique assignment was already attached to their life. A person was not sent into time to be creative out of nothing, but to discover what was already placed there and walk it out in obedience.

Who God Actually Is: His Communicable Attributes

God's communicable, or divine, attributes are the ones that can be shared or reflected in a person's own character:

• Good — there is no evil in him; any goodness found in a person is derived from him, not self-generated.
• Righteous — it is impossible for him to err or do wrong.
• Truth — whatever he says can be trusted completely, even when circumstances appear to say otherwise.
• Merciful — his mercy did not simply overlook sin; he took the judgment himself so that people could take his place. He is willing to take shame so someone else can take glory, willing to take death so someone else can take life.
• Light — he does not just tell the truth, he has the power to unveil it and bring a person into that reality.
• Holy — set apart in his own class, beyond corruption.

Who God Actually Is: His Incommunicable Attributes

Ephesians 1:17

These attributes belong to his deity alone and cannot be shared. God is eternal, with no beginning and no end; every other being, spirit or human, started somewhere and met him already in existence.

Malachi 3:6

God is immutable. He does not change, grow older, or improve. Because he is constant even while situations fluctuate, whatever he has promised one generation he is equally able to preserve for the next.

God is also omnipotent (all power is his, yet that power is always kept consistent with his own nature), omniscient (nothing about tomorrow takes him by surprise, so a person's future is already known and accounted for before it arrives), and omnipresent (he is not only aware of a coming storm, he is already present and waiting within it before a person ever arrives there).

Exodus 3:14

He is the "I AM THAT I AM," meaning he has the freedom to become whatever a situation requires: a defender, a friend, or a father in the middle of a battle. No threat carries any real weight against a person who is being kept by that kind of God.

God the Creator

Genesis 1:1-2

God is not merely a reformer or a transformer working with existing material; he creates. When the earth he had made became void and formless, he did not lament what had gone wrong. He simply began again, and within days the world was recreated. Whatever has been damaged, whether health, finances, or a relationship, is not beyond the reach of the one who made it in the first place; he does not only discover and repair, he can recreate.

What It Means to Be in Christ

Rediscovering identity in Christ rests on several clear pictures scripture gives:

John 8:12; Matthew 5:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:5

Believers are light, in the same way Jesus described himself as light. Light is not something that can be confused or overtaken by darkness; the way that light is released is through prayer, the same way Jesus's countenance was altered as he prayed on the mountain.

John 3:8

Believers are like the wind: no one can say exactly where it comes from or where it is going, and it cannot be stopped or contained by any single territory. A life lived from this identity is not limited by geography or by whatever a local situation seems to allow.

Hebrews 1:7

Believers are a flame of fire, meaning corruption cannot master someone who refuses to let it. Fire is not the thing that gets corrupted when it meets something impure; it purifies whatever it touches. No environment, however compromised, has the power to force someone into compromise against their will.

1 Peter 2:5

Believers are also described as living stones, or rock: something built to withstand pressure rather than to be worn down by it.

Revelation 1:6; 1 Peter 2:9; 2 Corinthians 5:20; John 1:12; Romans 8:17

Believers are made kings and priests, carrying authority and the capacity to bring God's presence into any space. They are ambassadors, representing another kingdom rather than negotiating from a position of need. And they are sons, which makes them heirs, sharing in the same standing, name, and anointing that belongs to Christ himself.

The Mystery of the Spoken Word

Genesis 1:2-3

Before God spoke over the formless, dark earth, the Spirit first moved over the waters. Only after that saturation did God begin to speak, and what he spoke was created. The first instance of spoken words in scripture was not for communication, since no one else was present to hear them; it was for creation. This is the pattern for anyone who wants to see a damaged situation, whether a business, a ministry, or a body, rebuilt: first let the place be saturated by the Spirit through prayer, worship, fasting, or generosity, and only then speak what is wanted rather than what is feared.

Job 22:28

"Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee." Many people unintentionally work against themselves by declaring defeat out loud in the middle of a battle, which is the same mechanism working in reverse. The tongue that says "I'm finished" is invoking the same law that could have spoken life.

Mark 5:28 (the woman with the issue of blood)

One further ingredient strengthens this: desperation. The woman who pressed through the crowd to touch Jesus's garment had already settled it in her heart that she would be made whole before she ever reached him; her desperation is part of what carried her through the resistance in her way.

An Invitation

Everything described here, sonship, priesthood, kingship, the identity of light and fire, belongs only to those who are in Christ. It becomes real through a genuine, personal surrender: believing that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again, and confessing him as Lord. That decision is what moves a person from being a stranger to these promises into standing as an heir of everything that belongs to him.
