How the human spirit works

We've been teaching on being a new creature in Christ. When you are born again, the Holy Spirit recreates and imparts life into your spirit man. The Holy Spirit is to your spirit what your spirit is to your body: the life force.

The human spirit can function independently, the same way the mind or body can work in someone who doesn't believe in God. That's why unbelievers can still produce great things: the human spirit is the production center of a person's life, and it produces the same way whether the output is good or evil.

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. The word "keep" is the same word God gave Adam for the garden: cultivate it, guard it from intruders. Whoever has access to your heart has access to the experiences of your life. God cannot act without gaining access to your heart, so your experiences are a product of what lies in your heart, not God's will alone.

Getting God's will into your heart

If God's will is for something to happen in your life, it must first be poured into your heart in abundant measure. If it isn't in your heart, it will not show up in your life. Praying for something externally without the spiritual substance to compel it produces only struggle and disappointment.

Matthew 12:34

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things; an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil things.

Proverbs 16:29

A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good; he shuts his eyes to devise perverse things. Shutting the eyes is meditation: a person meditates on a thing until it fills the heart, then speaks it consistently until it comes to pass. The word "things" in these verses means thoughts.

Philippians 4:7,8

The peace of God that passes understanding shall guard your hearts and minds. Whatsoever things are true, pure, of good report, think on these things. Answer to prayer works the same way: God supplies the thoughts.

Meditation writes the thought into you

Quiet time is the practice of thinking through what seems impossible until light breaks in your consciousness. Repetition is what integrates a thought into your being, the same way a nursery rhyme learned by repetition sticks for life while an exam answer, learned once, fades. That's why the kingdom is entered "as a little child": children learn by repetition.

Put away from you a forward mouth and perverse lips. Ponder the path of your feet and let your ways be established (Proverbs 4). Thinking through a challenge builds a strategy. Faith is not blind, it is intelligence and strategy of another kind, never one that harms others.

Imagination and words: how the spirit expresses itself

Genesis 11:6

Of the people building the tower of Babel, the Lord said they are one, they have one language, and nothing will be restrained from them that they have imagined to do. Dominion is part of the DNA of the human spirit; it does not want to be limited by the body or the environment.

The human spirit functions through two things: imagination and the words spoken.

We all with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image (2 Corinthians 3:18). Imagination is the first expression of the spirit.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not to your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5): your words are meant to surpass what you understand. If you only imagine and speak what your mind can grasp, you stay confined to that mental region. All breakthroughs come from a spirit that overrides understanding.

Guarding what fills your heart

• Don't let any word out of your mouth that contradicts what you're believing for
• Don't entertain thoughts that contradict what God has shown you

When a person shuts out every distraction and stays preoccupied with the thought God has given, the Holy Spirit begins to reveal exact strategies over time.

Jesus used wisdom, not money, to multiply the loaves; the only thing he used money for was to give to the poor. Wisdom comes from sitting still with God until one central strategy emerges. Rick Warren has said he sits still around 30 minutes a day; in that stillness came the idea for a single book, The Purpose Driven Life, the highest-selling Christian book outside the Bible.

Processing the thought God gives you

A thought from God is raw material; it still needs processing through sitting and thinking, not just repeating. Pastor Bill Winston meditated privately on buying a private jet and was given the scripture that a bird of the air shall carry his voice. He told no one; later, someone brought him spare parts for a jet.

"Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord" was not a call to do nothing (Exodus 14:13). When Jehoshaphat's people processed it, the answer was to send singers ahead: praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever. As they sang, something was triggered.

Jesus said to pray for laborers to be sent into the harvest, not for the harvest itself, because the harvest is already ripe. Being "sent" means clarity: the blind man told to wash in the pool of Siloam, Joshua marching around Jericho seven times before shouting. A sent person has clarity of strategy, not just general instruction.

While Joseph thought on these things, an angel appeared to him (Matthew 1:20). Thinking things through opens the door to angelic contact.

Love and joy: the two keys

• Love: how what you're imagining will bless and serve other people. Jesus never carried out a self-centered miracle
• Joy: not because something has happened yet, but because light has come, the "eureka" feeling that comes before manifestation

Three things to hold onto

1. Imagination: seeing life beyond where you are, not limited by your resources or position
2. Your words: consistent with what you're imagining, never contradicting it
3. Getting thoughts from the Holy Spirit in abundance, not just good thoughts, which can leave the soul lean without real fulfillment

Meditation shapes what you see in others

Meditating on a class of children not as 7 or 10 year olds but as future presidents, judges, or doctors causes the Spirit to supply the information needed to teach them in a way that shapes their destiny. Two children can be taught the same curriculum, but the one taught by someone who meditated on their future carries something different. It is spirit to spirit.
