The Mercy of God in the Life of Abraham — Part 2
Recap from the previous night: what the mercy of God did in Abraham's life.
- Mercy brought Abraham out of a family with negative history — his uncle Nahor lived without relevance, his father Terah started without finishing, his brother Haran died before his time.
- Mercy made Abraham the progenitor of a God generation — God started something new with him.
- Mercy made Abraham the covenant partner and friend of God. "Not of him that willeth or runneth, but of God that showeth mercy."
- Mercy made Abraham the symbol of the blessing — health, longevity, financial supply, all headquartered in him.
- Mercy made Abraham the father of kings and nations. Genesis 17:6 — "I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee." Genesis 17:16 — concerning Sarah, "she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her."
- Mercy gave Abraham voice and influence with God. Genesis 18:17-18 — God said, "Shall I hide from Abraham that which I do?" before telling him of the plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham negotiated with God over the righteous being destroyed with the wicked.
- Mercy caused God to rise to Abraham's defense on all occasions. Genesis 20:1-3 — when Abimelech, king of Gerar, took Sarah, God came to him in a dream and told him he was a dead man for taking another man's wife, giving him a chance to repent and return her.
- Mercy gave Abraham a place in eternity called Abraham's bosom. Luke 16:22 — the beggar Lazarus died and was carried by angels into Abraham's bosom.

God's mercy is our helpline on earth and our lifeline through eternity — it's mercy that guarantees eternal life and that sent Jesus to die for the world.
What Qualified Abraham for This Mercy
God sees things in people ahead of time — "Esau have I hated, Jacob have I loved" — he saw Esau would sell his birthright and Jacob would value the covenant heritage. What did God see in Abraham?
Willingness to obey God promptly on all issues
There was never an argument between them. Genesis 12:1 — when God said leave your father's house, Abraham said yes. When God said offer Isaac your son, Abraham said yes. Obedience qualifies for mercy.
Willingness to separate himself unto God
Genesis 12:1-2 — separate from ungodly friends, from prostitution, from idol worship — his father's household in the land of the Chaldees was idolatrous, and Abraham said yes to leaving it all. Anyone unwilling to separate from ungodly associations, lifestyles, and behavior is never qualified for mercy.
Willingness to go the full length with God
When God told Abraham to go, he didn't ask where — he simply went. Genesis 12:5 — he journeyed all the way into the land of Canaan. Nothing stopped him — not a chance at quick wealth, not an unbelieving spouse's ultimatum.
Willingness to hold nothing back from God
Genesis 22:1-3 — give me your son, your only son, Isaac — and Abraham said yes. Nothing was too much to give or do for God.
Readiness to bring everyone under his influence into relationship with God
Genesis 18:19 — "I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord." Abraham would not be ashamed to evangelize his employees, his community, everyone under his influence.
The attitude of mercifulness
Genesis 14:14 — when Abraham's brother was taken captive, he armed 318 trained servants born in his own house, men whose fathers he had fed and whose children he had raised and employed — despite having no child of his own. Psalm 18:25 — "With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful."
Testimony: at a recent crusade in Manila, Philippines, a woman who had been paralyzed and homeless for two years, living on the street and pushed by her husband in a wheelchair, was healed and stood to push the wheelchair herself. She and her husband were given accommodation and support to start a new life, and were later reunited with their family.
The decision to allow no man to take the place of God in his life
Genesis 14:22 — after Abraham's victory in battle, the king of Sodom offered him the goods, but Abraham refused, saying he had lifted his hand to the Lord that he would not take so much as a shoelace, "lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abraham rich." He wanted only God to get the glory.

Response
The mercy of God helps you escape hell and gain eternity with him — by fully surrendering your life to Jesus, abandoning the ways of the world, sin, and compromise, and embracing Jesus as Lord.
- Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I need your help. Come into my life, Lord, make me a new person. Today I have decided to follow you, Jesus — no turning back, forward ever, backward never.
- Oh God of mercy, have mercy on me. I receive your mercy in my life.
