Background: David anointed while his brothers were passed over
1 Samuel 16:1-13. Samuel was sent to the house of Jesse where God said there was a king among his sons. Jesse presented seven sons and none was chosen. It was David, the youngest, kept back with the sheep, that the Lord chose. The rejected stone became the anointed king.
10 to 12 mercies of God seen in the life of David
Mercy found David as the alternative to one who had failed God
Saul had failed God, and it took mercy for David to be found as the alternative. David was not the only one who could have been chosen.
Mercy saw a king in David while others saw a boy
What God sees of you and what God thinks of you is more important than what men see of you.
Mercy gave David a chance in a climate of generalized rejection
Not one person in the whole family spoke for David when Jesse did not present him.
Mercy qualified David for the throne after he had been disqualified by men
David's own father did not present him as a candidate, yet God said, "that is the one I am looking for."
Mercy gave David honor and dignity in the place where he had been tolerated and taken for granted
Samuel said, "there is one son in the bush, we will not sit down until he arrives," so his father, mother, brothers, and sisters were forced to stand and wait for the boy that meant nothing to them, yet meant something to heaven. Like Mordecai, whom Haman hated enough to plot the destruction of his whole people: when the king asked what should be done for the man he wished to honor, Haman assumed it was for himself and prescribed the king's own robe, horse, and crown, with a noble to lead him through the city announcing "this is the man the king delights to honor." The king ordered it done for Mordecai instead, and Haman himself had to lead his enemy through the city on foot.
Mercy anointed David king over Israel while the throne was not yet vacant
That seat would not be empty for another 13 years, yet God's mercy can give an appointment for an office that has not yet been created.
Mercy recognized and rewarded David for qualities others did not recognize
The acceptance of responsibility that kept him in the bush tending sheep while his brothers were at home. David was already the best instrumentalist in Israel, yet nobody cared until mercy came and took the cover off his potential, his gifting, and his grace.
Mercy took David to the palace and gave him a position above those who were there before him

1 Samuel 16:21, Saul instantly made him his armor-bearer.
Mercy helped him bring down Goliath and solve a national problem
1 Samuel 17:41-51.
Mercy gave him instant national favor and acceptance
1 Samuel 18:7, the people sang, "Saul has slain his thousands, David his ten thousands."
Mercy caused him to escape every conspiracy and confrontation of his life and destiny
From lions and bears to Saul's javelin, 1 Samuel 19:9-10; the conspiracy of the men of Keilah, people he had delivered before; the conspiracy of his own son Absalom and his army chief Joab; then the conspiracy of Adonijah. The worst enemies are enemies from inside, the worst witches are witches from your father's house.
Mercy established David as the reference king of Israel
Every king was measured either as doing well like David, or not, or doing evil like Jeroboam. 2 Kings 14:3 records how Amaziah did well, but not like David, David was a standard.

The secrets of the mercy David walked in
A heart for God
Psalm 42:1, "As the heart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee." Psalm 27:4, "one thing have I desired... that I may dwell in the house of the Lord."
The life of worship
2 Samuel 23:1 calls David the sweet psalmist of Israel, everything about God excited him.
Zeal and jealousy for God
1 Samuel 17:29, "Is there not a cause?" David could not stand an uncircumcised Philistine defying the armies of the living God. You can insult David, but you cannot insult his God. Some men today will kill over a football argument or rejoice when a rival team loses, but David's zeal was a fire for God alone.
A heart for people
1 Samuel 22:2, everyone in debt, in distress, and discontented gathered to David and he became their captain.
The life of sacrifice
Psalm 132:1, David swore he would not enter his house or give sleep to his eyes until he found a house for God.
The life of consecration
1 Samuel 16:5. All of Jesse's sons sanctified themselves before the anointing, yet only David arrived already consecrated, so Samuel did not need to tell him to sanctify himself, he had lived that way permanently.
Healing testimony and prayer of impartation
A man walking on crutches was called forward and prayed for, the paralysis and pain were declared gone in Jesus' name, and he walked and marched on the ground.
Father, I apply for your mercy, the same sure mercies of David.
