Recap: the utter helplessness of man

Salvation is the utter helplessness of man and the sovereign intervention of God. When it comes to the sovereign intervention of God, you need to understand contexts and potentialities, what is possible differs from context to context, the way a heart transplant would seem impossible in one century and normal in another.

Three kinds of life in the Greek

When the Bible talks about "life," it doesn't mean the same thing in every context. English has far fewer words than the Greek, so translations flatten distinct words into one.

  1. Bios

Biological existence, your physical, animal life, the root of "biology." Luke 8:14 speaks of the cares, riches, and pleasures of bios choking the word, your outward material and economic dimension. 1 John 2:16 lists "the pride of life" as the pride of bios.
  2. Psyche (suk)

Soulish life, your mind, will, and emotions, your personality, desires, and ambition, the self-centered dimension developed through school and self-effort. Matthew 16:25, whoever saves his life (psyche) shall lose it. Matthew 10:28, don't fear those who can kill the body but not the soul.

  4. Zoe

A superior quality of life, not just duration. Somebody operating in psyche calculates, like Philip counting how much bread 5,000 people would need, but Jesus, speaking from Zoe, simply says "feed them," knowing what to do. With men it is impossible, but not with God. Romans 8:11, if the Spirit of him who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you, he will give life to your mortal body by that same Spirit.

Nicodemus did not come to Jesus for theology training, he came because he saw results. Jesus told him, except a man be born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. The kingdom isn't somewhere you escape to, it's a realm with different potentialities that find expression in the practical parts of your life.

Bios and psyche alone aren't enough

Whoever designed chess had dark knowledge, the game is a parable of life: a king, a queen, a bishop, a soldier, and the pawns, the majority, limited in their movements. The real economics of the world happens behind the scenes before it goes public. There has never been a civilization that grew on intelligence alone, even the Egyptian and Babylonian kings used divination, that's how Daniel was invited into the cabinet. You can't go far in life if all you know is bios and psyche. Train your spirit, prioritize your soul.

The story of a genius untapped

An IT worker mined 7,500 bitcoins around 2009, before Bitcoin had real purchasing power, then threw away the hard drive holding his private keys. When Bitcoin surged, that loss was calculated at $500 million. He didn't lose the resource, he lost access to it because he didn't discern its value. In Northern Cape Town, South Africa in the 1860s, children played with white shiny stones found by fishermen, not realizing they were diamonds. That is the case of many believers, sitting on something of inestimable value they don't discern.

What does it profit a man?

Jesus asked what it profits a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul, speaking in real financial terms. If you took all the money and resources of the richest nations and credited it to one account, your soul is still worth more.

There are a few ways to lose your soul. One is pledging allegiance to the devil. But there's a subtler way: 3 John 2, "I want you to prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers." The prosperity of your soul is what legitimizes every other success. Only seek success that will not inhibit the prosperity of your soul. Whatever will make you too busy to nourish yourself spiritually is a threat, even if it looks like a business nugget.

Judge your worth by your temptations

True story: A relative was given an ugly designer wristwatch as a gift, never wore it, and gave it away, only to discover later, in a store, that the same watch retailed for $15,000. Even if you don't know your own value, whatever the devil tempts you with is his estimation of your worth, and it's always less than what you're actually worth. If he offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, it's because they would soon be under Jesus's feet anyway. Don't be flattered, don't fall for it.

You should follow God for God's sake, but those who press into God for God's sake find all other things added. Matthew 6, the birds of the air don't sow, don't reap, don't save, yet the Father feeds them, and you are worth more than many sparrows.

Seek first

If you knew certain things would be sorted, what would you do with your life? Put your life in that direction in faith now, and keep your soul constantly feeding, because that is where more capital in life comes from.

Behind the scenes of David's life

It's easy to assume David became king by luck, stumbling on Goliath's bragging. But there was a behind-the-scenes: a prophet anointed him years earlier, and for 13 years it looked like nothing was happening. Some results in your life are tied to things you don't even know about. Sometimes change is immediate, sometimes it stays seemingly dormant, waiting for the kairos moment. Things that looked like hardship, the lion and the bear, were toughening you up for an opportunity only you would be qualified to face.

Dimensions this spiritual capital manifests in

  1. Wisdom

Supernatural wisdom that isn't capital in the natural or soulish realm. Some things you simply know without conscious learning, direction on who to talk to, what to do, spot-on word of knowledge.
  2. Impartation

Like David being anointed by a prophet and told to go be king, with everything else left to what looks like supernatural chance, divine timing that lines up with the moment you're ready.
  3. Prophecy

  • I cancel every ordinance of darkness against you, against your health, against your future, against your identity, in Jesus's name.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
