The mercy of God in the life of Jacob

Romans 9:13

As it is written, this is God speaking: "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."

Our objective is to understand:

1. The situation of Jacob before mercy found him
2. What mercy did in the life of Jacob
3. The secrets of Jacob that positioned him for mercy

What was the situation of Jacob before mercy found him?

1. Jacob was a victim of struggle right from the womb of his mother

   The Bible said the children struggled together.

   Genesis 25:22

   There may be some people whose struggle started from the womb of their mother, as if everything was wrong with them before they were even born.

   Jacob was born as the second son

   He was not fortunate enough to be born first, which would have positioned him to inherit the birthright.

   Genesis 25:24-26

   Some of us in the middle growing up feel some level of disadvantage, that kind of middle child syndrome.

3. Jacob was given an identity contrary to his destiny, a label

   The name Jacob means con man. They gave him that name because he held the heel of his brother as they were coming out of the womb.

   Genesis 25:26

   Maybe there is a label on you, a bad name from birth or childhood, that was not good for your destiny.

4. Jacob was a victim of disfavor from his father

   The Bible said Isaac loved Esau, which means he didn't like Jacob.

   Genesis 25:27-28

   Rebecca loved Jacob since Isaac didn't. Maybe you have suffered rejection from father, mother, family or friends. I am here to announce that the God of love and the God of mercy shall show you His mercy and His love tonight.

5. Jacob was a victim of a negative character trait

   Jacob began to be untruthful, claiming to be Esau to receive his father's blessing.

   Genesis 27

   Maybe there is a habit, a character trait, that should make even God not to like you. I declare today it shall be broken in the name of Jesus.

   Jacob had a threat on his life and had to be on the run for 21 years

   Esau threatened to kill him once their father died, so Jacob's parents sent him away.

   Maybe there is a threat on your life. I announce by the mercy of God that threat is interrupted, intercepted, cancelled, nullified.

7. Jacob's life was a life of labor and struggle for 21 years

   He labored 7 years for Rachel, was cheated and given Leah instead, then labored another 7 years.

   Genesis 29:23-28

   If your life is full of labor without reward, labor is over forever.

8. Jacob was a victim of continuous fraud and deception from his uncle Laban

   He labored, and his uncle kept cheating him and changing his wages.

   Genesis 31:7

What gave Jacob the qualification for mercy?

1. Value for the God of his fathers

   Go through the entire Bible, you will never find one place where Esau called on God. Jacob had encounters with God.

   God will never give His blessing to a man who does not value Him. Esau valued food, his flesh, his stomach above every other thing.

2. Value for the covenant heritage

   Jacob knew Abraham and Isaac had a covenant with God and wanted to enter that line by all means. Esau could not perceive it, but Jacob perceived it.

   God will never give a man what they don't value. Esau sold his birthright, his future, his destiny, for food.

3. Jacob had vision for the future

   His life was not settled in the moment. Esau had no vision for tomorrow, saying "give me your food, let me eat" and selling a permanent asset to handle a temporary need.

   Food is temporary. Hunger is temporary. You can't die in your father's house of hunger.

4. Jacob engaged the power of prayer

   "Lord, if you take me where I'm going and I return back in peace to my father's house, this place will be my house and the house of the Lord, and the tenth of everything you give to me, I'll give back to you."

   Genesis 28:12-19

   He called on the name of the Lord, and wrestled with God until the break of day.

   Genesis 32:24

What did the mercy of God do for Jacob?

1. Enlarged and enhanced his capacity

   From being a person to becoming a nation. Jacob was a person; Israel is a nation. It changed him from Jacob to Israel, from an individual to an institution.

2. Imparted the power to face the future without fear

   "As a prince, I give you power. Go into the future and have nothing to fear."

3. Imparted upon Jacob the mantle of royalty

   As a priest, you have power with God and you have prevailed.

   Genesis 32:28

Tonight, what the mercy of God will do for somebody is make them a voice in their family, a voice for the kingdom, a voice in their community and generation. It will cause you to live free of any bad habit, any label, any identity, and qualify you for eternity with God in heaven.
