The responsibilities of youth

The Bible speaks to the youthful season of life in order to have a future in old age, Lamentations chapter 3. The youth season is a season of responsibility.

Four things by way of introduction:

1. The possibilities of old age are the product of the responsibilities of youth.
2. The harvest of older age is the product of the sowings of the younger age.
3. The effective management of the younger years is the foundation for the productive engagement of older years.
4. The mismanagement of the youth age is the defacement of old age.

There are people on earth today who in their older years are full of regret and remorse, wasted and lost opportunities, because those earlier years were not managed well.

   Ecclesiastes 12:1

   
   "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not." The young age, contrary to what many young people think, is the age to dash yourself to God, not the season to waste in partying, night clubbing, or cultism. Those who say they will come to the Lord later, after finishing with the world, are believing a lie of the devil.

   • Bishop David Oyedepo gave his life to Christ at 16, Oral Roberts at 17, John D. Rockefeller, the first dollar billionaire in the world, before age 12. Embracing the Lord early saved them a lot of mistakes.
   • A young girl who had squandered her life through 12 abortions and lost most of her fertility gave her life to Christ on a hospital consultation table. She later finished law school, married, and had a child, purely by God's mercy. She did not need to go through that route.

2. Access the secrets of God

   Job 29:4

   
   "As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle." The days of youth are the days when the secrets of God rest on your life, when you embrace the light, insight, and revelation that will catapult you through life.

   • Kenneth Hagin was dying at 17 of a blood and heart condition when he received the revelation of Mark 11:23. That revelation became the pillar of his life and ministry.
   • Bishop Oyedepo still shares revelations he received from scripture at age 16 and 17.
   • Reading Acts 1:8 at about 19 or 20 made an impression that his assignment is not just to speak the principles of God but to demonstrate the power of God, and it became the pillar of his own life and ministry.

3. Confirm your life's vision

   Joseph began to dream dreams that reflected his future, Genesis 37:5-9. David told his brother, "Is there not a cause?" 1 Samuel 17:29. Jesus told Pilate, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth," John 18:37.

   
   A life left to chance has no chance. What crosses your mind determines what will cross your life.

   • Decades ago, wrote in a university yearbook that his ambition was to preach, minister fire, and go round the world impacting it. That deep-rooted vision has since produced crusades across Nigeria, and in Panama, the Philippines, Indonesia, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Argentina and Brazil. You don't arrive at a future by chance, you arrive by the choice of vision planted in your heart today.

4. Establish conviction

   Joseph had a stand and reported his brothers' evil, Genesis 37:2. David had a stand against Goliath when all Israel was afraid.

   
   Martin Luther King Jr. said if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything. Many young people don't have a mind or choice of their own, so they take on the mind of society. If you are going to have a place in the future, you must have a stand in the present, even if you have to stand alone.

5. Uphold character

   Thoughts give birth to actions. Repeated actions form habit. Established habit forms character. Confirmed character defines destiny.

   • Joseph's character among his brothers and in Potiphar's house catapulted him to the palace.
   • When Samuel came to anoint a king, all of Jesse's other sons had to be sanctified first, but David arrived already sanctified, and God simply said, "Arise, anoint him." Nothing corrupts destiny like iniquity.
   • The eagle, king of the birds, will not taste anything rotten; the vulture eats anything and is a reproach. Though they belong to the same family, their character is different. Seeing an eagle is a revelation, seeing a vulture is a nightmare.

6. Go the extra mile

   Your youth age must be an age where you do what others avoid, deploying yourself into the arena of answers instead of giving excuses.

   • Joseph offered solutions to the butler and baker's dreams though nobody asked him, and God took him to a place of generational solutions.
   • David's brothers abandoned the flock, but David stayed and faced the lion and the bear. When Goliath came, he alone accepted responsibility, "Is there not a cause? It's not under my watch."
   • Elijah alone was willing to confront Jezebel and Ahab while a thousand other prophets hid in caves, 1 Kings 19. God gathered their mantles and gave them to Elijah.

   As God sees you ready to go the extra mile and do the work of others, He gives generational assignment and generational mantles.

7. Generate spiritual fire for the future

   This is the season for rugged, drastic spiritual exercises. Jesus had already done a 40 day fast by the time He was 30.

   • Did a first 3 day dry fast at age 11. A young man in the same camp who kept secretly breaking his own fast never got serious with his life, and it ended miserably, multiplied wives, alcoholism, all manner of trouble.
   • In medical school, spent 1 to 3 hours praying before 8am classes and another 30 minutes to an hour during lunch break, so the weight of academics would not drown his spiritual life. Never failed an exam.
   • In a national park in Kenya, a guide explained that a lion lets out a roar every several hours purely for territorial maintenance, to let every jackal know it is still here. That is what fasting and praying in the spirit do, territorial maintenance, not a prayer for a husband, wife, car or exam.
   • A colleague would preach non-stop through an entire car journey to resolve a university leadership crisis. Decades later, raising children and grandchildren, the pressures of life never closed her spirituality, because of habits built in youth.

   The habit built now means that even if pressure later drops your prayer life to one hour or your fasting to once a week, your body will no longer be able to survive prayerlessness.

The responsibilities of youth: develop quality relationship with God, access His secrets and revelation, confirm your life's vision, establish your conviction, uphold character, go the extra mile, and generate spiritual fire for the future.
