Why Marriage Deserves Your Fullest Attention

The whole of your future can be messed up by a relationship. It does not matter how spiritual you are, how anointed you are, or how many gifts you carry.

The devil is not concerned about the revival meetings you attend. He is waiting for you at home.

Numbers 22:23

The children of Israel had conquered every nation in their path, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Ammonites. When Balak saw that force could not stop them, he brought in the Midianite women, and Israel's men began to marry them. In one day, twenty-three thousand men were killed. What every enemy nation could not do, a wrong relationship did in a single day.

God did not institute the church first. He instituted family. Because it is the first thing God established, it is the most important thing to study, yet many of us give church more attention than we give the home we are being prepared to build.

You are entering a lifetime institution with almost no preparation. People spend six or seven years training to become an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, then walk into marriage having read one or two books on the subject. A marriage will resemble the level of knowledge or ignorance the two people bring into it. High expectation plus high ignorance produces high frustration.

The Four Kinds of Singleness

1. Voluntary Temporary Singles

Those who are single by their own current choice, but not for life. The danger with staying in this category too long is that independence begins to reshape the psyche. A person can settle so deeply into arranging life alone that they enter a season of perfection, protective of their own systems and afraid that another person will "mess up the arrangement."

  • Preparation must not become the goal, it must remain a means to an end.
  • Marriage is a place where two people learn to build together, including learning each other's ways of doing ordinary things.
  • This season must be a season, not a lifetime.

2. Voluntary Permanent Singles

Those who, for the sake of a calling or assignment, choose to remain single for life, kingdom-focused and purpose-driven. Some are given extraordinary grace not to carry the same desire for marriage others carry, or grace and discipline to subdue it. Paul, Jesus, and John the Baptist walked this path.

  • They often show a tendency toward isolation and loneliness.

  • They may live without being accountable to anyone.
  • Those in ministry tend to be excessively ministry-focused.

The danger is trying to imitate their pattern without carrying their grace.

3. Involuntary Permanent Singles

Those facing singleness not by choice, but through circumstances beyond their control: severe health conditions, physical limitations, or lifelong caregiving assignments. Mordecai never married, because he carried the lifelong responsibility of raising Esther.

The beautiful thing about this category is that there is still a God who reverses situations. This is where the supernatural steps in.

4. Involuntary Temporary Singles

Singles who desire marriage, pray for it, prepare for it, but face delay they cannot explain. This is the largest category. The question is not always "what else am I supposed to do," but "who else am I supposed to be."

Roadblocks That Delay Marriage

  1. Negative patterns — cycles that repeat themselves, generational or personal, always attracting the wrong kind of people, or relationships that build up only to fizzle away without explanation. These patterns can run in families and need to be confronted directly, sometimes as a family matter, not managed around.
  2. Unbroken soul ties — being with one person while emotionally tethered to another. Soul ties are not imagined away; they must be confronted and renounced by name, and anything that keeps triggering the memory (a car, a gift, a social media page) must be removed.
  3. Unresolved trauma — wounds of abandonment, rejection, or abuse that build walls around the heart, so a person can be present in a relationship without being fully engaged. Trauma tells you that you are not good enough for what is desirable, so you settle for what is merely available. It qualifies you for someone's "night," not their "morning." Mephibosheth was dropped in the chaos of his father's death, and the fall crippled not only his leg but his sense of self, so that even in a king's palace he called himself a dead dog.
  4. Sexual sin and perversion — pornography, masturbation, sexual toys, cohabitation. Living with someone before marriage, or receiving the benefits of a wife without the commitment of a husband, is uncleanness whether or not it is called fornication.

This is your season. Now for everyone who is an involuntary temporary single, God is calling you to increase your attractiveness. This is your season to be married.

Increasing Your Attraction Power

  • Availability — you cannot be bought if you are not available. Rushing out of every service and isolating at home does not position you to be found.
  • Accessibility — being present is not the same as being reachable. People must be able to relate with you, not just observe you.
  • Friendability — he who wants a friend must show himself friendly. Greet others, and the likelihood of being greeted back increases.
  • A sense of responsibility — a vision, purpose, and financial discipline. Marriage is not a rescue program from poverty for either party; come out of poverty before you marry, not through marriage.
  • Spirituality — closeness to God increases attractiveness in a way people cannot always explain.

Increasing Your Retention Power

  • Attitude — Abigail's response to David in the heat of his anger, calling him "my lord," is what drew him to remember her once Nabal died. Attitude retains what beauty attracts.
  • Behavior — the daily conduct that either confirms or contradicts a good first impression.
  • Communication — a soft answer, mind ruling over mouth rather than mouth running ahead of mind.

Father, I thank You for this moment and for the privilege of sharing together. Where You need to speak to any one of us, I believe You have spoken. Whatever we need to stop doing, start doing, or continue doing, let Your Spirit apply these words to every heart. Let this be the season in which marital destinies are opened and many are settled. In Jesus' mighty name we pray.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."

- Apostle Emmanuel Iren
