Two Are Better Than One

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion, but woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Notice the kind of two being described here, it is a two where either partner has the capacity to lift up the other. This is not a union of two weak, impoverished, or needy individuals, it is the union of two people who each bring something of value to offer the other.

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm, but how can one be warm alone. This generation has tried to answer that question with counterfeits, but there is no substitute for a real human union, and the end of every counterfeit is vanity.

Proverbs 18:22, the Message translation, reminds us that a good marriage is critical to a good life. For those already married, even a wrong match can be turned around by God for good, but no marriage works where the couple in it does not work at it. If you find a marriage working, you have found a couple working.

Enlist, Envision, Equip, Empower, Evaluate

Every man carries an assignment toward his wife. You enlist her into your life and vision. You envision her, opening up the whole blueprint of where the marriage and the calling are going, not leaving her to guess. You equip her and empower her to function in her own strength, and you evaluate together, regularly checking in on how she is doing and whether she is facing any challenge.

A wife should be free to remain herself inside a marriage, not molded into someone unrecognizable. History carries painful warnings for ministers who neglected their wives while pursuing public ministry. William Carey's neglect of his wife contributed to her mental health decline. John Wesley's marriage was famously troubled, and when his wife eventually left, he treated it as freedom rather than loss. Kathryn Kuhlman never recovered from the heartbreak of an earlier marriage. The lesson: it is possible to be married and still be alone.

No Good Marriage Happens by Accident

A thriving marriage is not a game of luck, chemistry, or romantic feeling, it is the result of holy, deliberate architecture. God does not build casually, he builds creation by design, the tabernacle by pattern, and marriages by intention. Every marriage that is thriving today is the product of concentrated, consecrated choices.

Seven Things Every Working Marriage Needs

  1. Desire. You must want your marriage to work badly enough to fight for it. Desire is what fuels a working marriage.
  2. Decision. A daily, conscious decision to choose your spouse above self, above pleasure, above the opinions of friends. It is not a vow made once at the altar, it is chosen again every day.
  3. Design. Sit down and design how the marriage will run: how you will raise your children, how you will handle finances, and how you will communicate. Couples who understand their differing money personalities, for example, learn to build shared structures like joint accounts rather than fighting over spending habits. Couples should also agree on a parenting style. Authoritarian parenting has rules and regulation but no relationship. Indulgent parenting has relationship and no boundaries, allowing children to manipulate parents through tantrums. Uninvolved parenting has neither rules nor relationship. Authoritative parenting holds rules, regulation, and relationship together, and relationship should come first, mirroring how God related to Adam before giving him instruction.
  4. Discipline. The training of your mind and body to implement your design, even when feelings go cold. Discipline is why you keep performing your duties toward your spouse even in a season of offense. Discipline also draws healthy boundaries with extended family, so that no parent, sibling, or in-law is permitted to interfere in the marriage, and every request from either family is communicated through the spouse, not around them.
  5. Diligence. The persistent, positive application of effort to remain disciplined, every day, regardless of how you feel.
  6. Dedication. Sticking with the marriage in season and out of season. The church has too often modeled instability at home while performing well on stage, and it shows, marriages among ministers are breaking down publicly, undermining the very message being preached.
  7. Determination and Development. A settled resolve that on your watch the marriage will not fail, paired with ongoing personal growth, reading, learning, and mentorship, rather than assuming marriage will simply work itself out. Much of what looks like irreconcilable differences is really unaddressed ignorance, including not understanding your spouse's temperament and background. The Bible says a house is built by wisdom, not by strength or by fasting, so the purpose of prayer in marriage is to secure wisdom, prayer is a means, not an end.

Becoming a Power Couple

God's original intention is that marriage be a union of two strong people, not necessarily equally strong in the same things, and not carbon copies of one another. When God gave dominion in Genesis 1:26-28, he did not give it to the man alone, he said let them have dominion, male and female together. Maximum dominion is expressed through marital union, which is exactly why marriage is under such spiritual attack, an attack on marriage is an attack on dominion.

Look at the word "together" throughout scripture and notice what follows it. How good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity, for there the Lord commands a blessing. The disciples were gathered together in the upper room when the sound of a mighty rushing wind came. When Israel was divided into tribes and kingdoms, weaker voices like Jezebel's gained strength over compromised leaders like Ahab. When Elijah rebuilt the altar in 1 Kings 18, he took twelve stones representing the tribes and brought them back together, and it was that restored unity, healing the altar, that preceded the fire falling and the turning point for the nation. For as long as families and churches remain divided, nations stay weak, fixing the family is how nations get fixed.

A power couple is a strategic and dynamic partnership powered by covenant toward the accomplishment of a specific goal. Each partner intentionally complements the other's weakness and celebrates the other's strengths. Where one is strong, it covers where the other is weak, so that together there is a strong "us," not two isolated points of weakness. A dreamer married to a doer produces results, a pragmatist married to an idealist brings visions down to earth.

God's intention is that your spouse thrives in their own space, not only inside your shadow. A husband's calling does not require a wife to give up her own gifts or work, and a wife's success does not diminish a husband's, both can be thriving individually while thriving together in the home.

The Rewards of a Strong Marriage

  • Good reward. Good children, a good retirement, and a beautiful old age come to couples who build a strong shared foundation. Smart couples invest good memories in each other ahead of time, sewing into a future where they will need one another's help.
  • Great support. A power couple carries each other through seasons of need. When one is about to go down, the other is there to lift them back up.
  • Physical and relational wellbeing. Regular, healthy intimacy between husband and wife is part of God's design for marriage and carries documented wellbeing benefits, including hormonal balance, reduced stress and anxiety, improved mood, better sleep, and stronger immune function. Research has also linked consistent marital intimacy to lower risk of certain cancers and better cardiovascular health. Encouraging one another in this area of marriage, rather than treating it as an obligation, is part of loving your spouse well.

Marriage is a union of two strong people brought together in covenant, and that union, rightly built, becomes the strongest place of dominion, support, and reward available to any two people on earth.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
