Spiritual Aggression and Holy Anger

The passage referenced is 1 Samuel 17 — David and Goliath.

David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and there was no sword in his hand. He ran, stood upon the Philistine, took his sword, drew it from its sheath, and cut off his head. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. As noted in 1 Samuel 17:54, David took the head and carried it to Jerusalem.

He held that head dripping with blood and took it back to the capital city, and his heart did not shake. This is a 17-year-old boy. No wonder God called David a man after His own heart — a man who could exhibit any level of anger, any level of violence, any level of aggression to enforce the purpose of God for his generation.

Pastors are plenty, but angry people are few. Apostles are plenty, but people with spiritual aggression are few.

There is not much we can accomplish for God in our generation without a massive dose of anger, a massive dose of aggression, a massive dose of violence against the forces of darkness.

Why Is Anger Necessary?

1. Anger is needed to put the enemy where he belongs

   To put the enemy where he belongs, we need an angry heart, an angry spirit, an aggressive and violent spirit.

2. Anger is needed to enforce the will of God

   If you leave the devil, he will do what he wants. But God is looking for aggressive people to enforce His will on the earth.

3. Anger is needed to take what is ours in God

   What is ours in God is takable by anger. It is a command — Ephesians 4:26 says: Be angry. He didn't say when you are angry ensure you don't sin. He said be angry. Anger is a necessity at certain times. Anger is commanded under certain circumstances. There are things you can never achieve until you are angry.

   • Be angry with stagnation.
   • Be angry with oppression.
   • Be angry with backwardness.
   • Be angry with affliction and infirmity.
   • Be angry with the devil that wants to bury your family members.

   Ensure the anger leads you in righteousness. Let it be a righteous rebellion against the devil. It is not demonic anger — that is what makes you slap your wife or terrorize your employees. This is anger that makes the devil turn and run.

The strength of the oppressor is in the tolerance of the oppressed. Every oppressor — whether the devil or oppressive systems — the strength of the oppressor is in the patience and calmness of the oppressed. Once the oppressed decide "enough is enough," the strength of the oppressor can be broken.

Bad people triumph because good people are silent. Silence is consent. When you are silent in the face of affliction, you are in agreement. When you refuse to roar against the devil and oppression, you are actually aiding and abetting the oppressor.

Only one Elijah was enough for his generation. The challenge is the bankruptcy of Elijahs in our generation — men who will rise to roar in the closet, at the place of prayer, and in the public space, and call evil evil, call wickedness wickedness, call oppression oppression.

The Lion Roars

The lion roars. Judges 14:5 says when Samson went down to Timnath, a young lion roared against him. Job 4:10 talks about the roar of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion.

Nothing is qualified to be called a lion without a roar. A roarless lion is a useless lion. A roarless lion is not different from a sheep.

Lions roar for two critical reasons:

1. Lions roar to maintain territory — to confirm this is their territory.
2. Lions roar against the forces of their enemy — against the wicked, against the forces of your enemy.

When was your last roar? When last did you raise your voice against the enemy? When last did you raise your voice against the forces of darkness in your community? When last did you raise your voice against the forces of evil in your generation?

Pharaoh held the people of God down for 430 years — until God sent Moses with a roar. Exodus 4:23: Moses went with a roar. He said to Pharaoh: let my son go that he may serve me. And if thou refuse to let him go, behold I will slay your son, even your firstborn.

For 40 days, Goliath moved like a human mountain. Day after day: give me a man that we may fight together. 40 days — nobody could confront Goliath. All the men turned into chickens. Men of war became chickens on the battlefield.

Then David arrived: who is this person roaring? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? I would rather die than watch this man defile the armies of the living God. He began to match roar with roar. David said to Goliath: you come to me with a sword and a spear. I am coming to you in the name of the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied. He had the final say and Goliath collapsed.

Until you roar, God has nothing to confirm. He confirmed the word of His servant and performed the counsel of His messengers. Angels have nothing to run with because they excel in strength at the sound of His word.

The Fearless Unshakable Heart

2 Samuel 17:9-10 speaks of one who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion.

The lion's heart is responsible for three things:

1. The lion's heart is the reason for the lion's share — it takes a lion heart to have a lion's share in life.
2. The lion's heart is the reason for the lion's mark — the impact, the influence.
3. The lion's heart is the reason for the lion's falls (feats).

God cannot do much with the fearful. God cannot do much with the faint-hearted. Great visions cannot be fulfilled with a faint heart.

In Deuteronomy 20:2-4, 8, the priest was to speak to the people before battle and say: hear O Israel, let not your hands faint, fear not, do not tremble, neither be terrified — for the Lord your God goes with you to fight for you. And the officer was to say: what man is here that is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house — lest his fear infect his brethren.

Fear is a virus. You cannot win life's battles with a fearful heart. You can't win spiritual battles with a fearful heart. You can't win the battles of your destiny with a fearful heart.

Gideon had 32,000 people — Judges 7:3. God said: whoever is fearful and afraid, let him return. 22,000 went back. That shows us the percentage of timid, emasculated, spineless people unable to stand for anything. Then God said the remaining 10,000 are still too many. Take them to the water. Those who lapped the water keeping their eyes up, watching for the enemy — 300 out of 10,000. He said: with only these 300 who are ruthless, fearless, and strategic, I will overrun the enemy. And God overran the enemy with 300 instead of 32,000.

God is not looking for a crowd. God is looking for a crop of fearless, strategic people.

In Matthew 14:22-29, in the fourth watch of the night there was a storm and Jesus walked on the sea. When the disciples saw Him, they cried out for fear. Then Peter said: Lord, if it is You, bid me come to You on the water. He said: come. Peter stepped out and walked on the water to Jesus.

A fearless heart produces three results:

• You will be able to walk on any storm of life, destiny, and ministry.
• You will accomplish results that your contemporaries can never dare — Peter was the only apostle who walked on water.
• You step into the dimensions of the Master Himself — the works that Jesus does, you shall do, and greater works.

But Peter began to fear, and he began to sink. Divine manifestations can never be sustained in the climate of fear. What God wants to do and has done cannot remain in the climate of fear. God wants to do so much but He is limited by our fear, our cowardice. When you begin to fear, your results begin to disappear.

In Revelation 21:8: the fearful and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. Fear places you in the same class as sorcerers. Fear means you believe more in the badness of the devil than you believe in the goodness of God. Fear is actually faith in the devil.
