Text: Naaman the leper

2 Kings chapter 5, verses 1 to 14

Naaman, captain of the Syrian army, was a great and honored warrior, but he was a leper. A captive Israelite girl serving his wife told her of a prophet in Samaria who could heal him. Naaman went to Elisha, was told to dip seven times in the Jordan, and was angry that the prophet did not come out to meet him or call on the name of the Lord. His servants persuaded him to obey. He dipped seven times, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child.

Leprosy in this story represents impurity, unholiness, shame, disgrace, isolation, depression, confusion, and uncertainty.

Five secrets behind Naaman's healing

  1. Faithful, productive ministry with influence

Naaman was loyal and valuable to his king, too valuable to be left to suffer. If you make yourself valuable to God and to men, if your generation and your nation feel the impact of your life, the seed of your influence will bring forth a harvest of answers.

Zechariah continued serving in the temple though he and Elizabeth were old and barren, and an angel met him there to say his prayer was answered. Your service today answers the prayers you prayed yesterday. The Shunammite woman ministered to Elisha without even asking for a child, yet he told her that by that time next year she would have a son. Don't let your situation stop your dedication. If your situation doesn't stop your dedication, your dedication will end your situation.

  2. A heart of love for people

The captive girl in Naaman's house became like a daughter to him, because he had been a good and loving master, not a wicked one. She, his wife, and his household were united in wanting his healing. When the king of Israel feared Naaman's arrival was a pretext for war, Elisha stepped in so that he would know there is a God in Israel.

Love is the character of God, and every time love acts, God acts. When Paul was stoned and dragged out for dead, his brothers surrounded him with love, and he rose up. Don't let people's wickedness change your nature or cause you to transfer the pain someone else caused you onto others.

  3. Appreciating the ministry of a prophet

Naaman was healed because he was willing to encounter the ministry of a prophet. Many people do not value the anointing of God and treat church like an entertainment place. A testimony was shared of a man who brought back anointed water and an anointed jacket from a conference to his wife, who had a spine condition and was in a wheelchair; when the jacket was laid on her back, the condition disappeared, because he valued the prophetic ministry.

  4. Obedience, even when instructions seem illogical

Naaman was angry that he was told only to dip in a river, when the rivers of Damascus seemed better than the Jordan. Nothing changed after the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, or sixth dip, but on the seventh, the leprosy was gone completely.

    • Not everything God tells you to do will sound logical. If you overanalyze divine instructions, you paralyze divine manifestation.
    • Divine results are a product of simplicity, not complexity. A small key opens a big door, a small hinge moves a big door.
    • Just because results don't happen instantly doesn't mean they won't happen eventually. When results are delayed, continue in obedience, and when your obedience is complete, your result will manifest.
  5. Meeting in the river

The river represents the Holy Spirit.

John 7:37-39 — out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water, speaking of the Spirit.

God doesn't just want to dip you in the river, He wants the river to flow out of you. Picture a bottle placed inside a river, so that the bottle is in the river and the river is in the bottle. Many people have the bottle in the river but not the river in the bottle. When many rivers flow, they become a flood of revival that fills the earth.

Eight things the river of the Holy Spirit is

  1. A river of purification

a river of purification for a people and a generation, as Naaman was cleansed after dipping. 2 Kings 5:13
  2. A river of endowment

on the day of Pentecost, as Peter spoke, hearts broke under conviction, a river of transformation.
  3. A river for dry land, a river of refreshment

Isaiah 43:19 — I will release rivers in the desert.
  4. A river of healing and the supernatural

Ezekiel's vision of the river flowing from under the altar, where everything the river touches lives, a river for the healing of nations.
  5. A river that dissolves the thrones of principalities and powers

Nahum 2:6 — the gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved. Thrones of witchcraft and the occult are destroyed.
  6. A river of joy

Psalm 46:4 — there is a river, the streams whereof make glad the city of God. Romans 14:17 — the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
  7. A river of revelation

Acts 2:17-18 — in the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.
  8. A river of harvest

the Jordan overflowed its banks at harvest time. Wherever the Holy Spirit overflows, it is harvest season, and whole cities come to Jesus, as in Acts 13:44.

God is about to do something new. Just because a step of obedience hasn't produced results yet doesn't mean it won't. Continue to obey, and you will see the answer.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
