Rivers of Revival: The Story of Naaman
2 Kings 5
Naaman was a mighty and brave commander, but he was a leper. A young servant girl from Israel told her mistress that there was a prophet in Samaria who could heal her master. Naaman went to his king, who sent him to the king of Israel with a letter and ten talents of silver. Elisha sent a messenger with instructions to go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and his flesh would be restored. Naaman was angry. He had expected the prophet to come out personally, call on the name of the Lord, and strike the place of the disease with his hand. He asked whether the rivers of Damascus were not better than all the waters of Israel, and turned away in fury. His servants reasoned with him: if the prophet had asked something difficult, would he not have done it? Why not obey a simple instruction? He obeyed, washed in the Jordan, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child.
The Enemy Attacks Destiny
Naaman had great influence and glory. The Bible records that the Lord had given deliverance to Syria through him in the past, yet his present life was limited and held back by leprosy. Those carrying a calling and a mission from God often find the enemy fighting to stop it, confronting the life of anyone on whom a generation waits.
Destinies the enemy resisted:
- Moses carried the fate of Israel, yet the enemy kept him in the wilderness for forty years.
- Joseph carried a destiny to deliver his people from famine, yet spent years in slavery and prison.
- David was destined to deliver Israel from Goliath, yet the enemy held him in the wilderness and brought him face to face with a lion before he entered his destiny.
- Esther, a girl without father or mother, was under attack and counted as nothing, yet carried the greatness of God to save her people from Haman.
The devil will not stop the one God has chosen to become what He has called them to be. The forces of hell will not stop you, and the forces of darkness will not stop you.
An illustration was shared of a key leader in a ministry in England who suddenly fell into a violent, deranged state. Recognizing that this was the same man God had once used to break a sorcerer's power, prayer was made by phone against the spirit at work. Within thirty minutes, something left him and his mind was restored.
What Leprosy Represents
Uncleanness
Leprosy represents dirt and impurity, the possible consequence of a sinful life, or uncleanness from addiction. Many powerful people are bound by the enemy in chains of addiction, drugs, alcohol, or witchcraft, carrying an unclean spirit.Incompleteness
Leprosy means being unwhole and unhealthy, something missing. Many in this generation feel drained and empty, even those God wants to use in their families and nations. That emptiness is why people try to fill the void with alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, immorality, pornography, or gambling. Some, feeling that emptiness has made life meaningless, have even taken their own lives.Disability
Leprosy represents inability, the loss of capacity to walk a straight path or use one's potential. Many carry great potential but have become powerless, their minds not functioning at their best, their effectiveness diminished.Shame
Leprosy is an embarrassing, shameful condition. Glory that once rested on a life can suddenly depart, leaving someone who was once valued and respected now carrying shame. The river of revival cleanses that shame.Isolation
Lepers were left alone; no one wanted to be near them. Many carry a situation that has cut them off, left them abandoned and disconnected from relationships. This too is a form of spiritual leprosy, and God can heal it.Depression
Naaman, though a great man, carried depression alongside his greatness. Many today have wealth, influence, and position, yet no joy.An illustration was shared of a young man who had slept on the street from the age of eleven and never learned what love or joy meant. He served people hoping for acceptance rather than out of love, and felt nothing even when his uncle died in his arms. After an encounter where he was personally acknowledged and welcomed, he wept through the night, and something changed in his heart. His marriage, which had been full of tension because he had no love to give, began to flourish.
Lack of Clarity and Focus
Leprosy represents a life without direction, like someone in prison with no plan for the future. Some who have watched others achieve much have quietly backslidden from faith, deciding to simply let life happen as it will.
I created you for a purpose. I created you with a purpose, to have a future and a hopeful ending. There is a future for you.
- Father, I receive a river, a river of joy, a river of love, a river of excitement, in the name of Jesus.
- Father, thank you for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. Come into my life, let Your will be done. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit; take Your place in my life, in Jesus' name.
- Holy Spirit, flow through me in the language of the Spirit. Let these rivers flow now, today, in Jesus' name.
