Beyond Tithes and Giving (Part 4): Maximizing the Blessing

Isaiah 61:9

Their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people. All that see them shall acknowledge them that they are the seed which the Lord has blessed.

Our objective is understanding what to do to maximize and multiply the blessing of God in our lives, beyond tithes and giving.

God is not trying to give you what will stay and remain with you. He is trying to do what will flow beyond you, travel beyond you, and live beyond you. If you think the blessing God wants to give you is what will remain with you, that is an error.

God is a God of principles and systems, and the blessing of God follows those systems Deuteronomy 28:1-2. To violate his principles is to nullify his blessings. To ignore his systems is to forgo his blessings.

Illustration: systems in the human body

The central nervous system, the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal system, the genitourinary system, the musculoskeletal system. When one system shuts down, it can lead to death, no matter how well the other systems are working. In the same way, giving and tithing is one system. You can be 100% with giving and zero with the other systems, and nothing works.

Recap: Systems That Make the Blessing Work

1. Possess vision and goals of excess and abundance. What you cannot see, you cannot seize. What is not within your view is beyond your reach.
2. Be diligent. Accept responsibility. No matter how much you pray and fast, if you are lazy, life will never be easy.
3. Possess integrity. God will never bless fraud.
4. Maintain a reserve. Do not spend everything.
5. Be investment minded. The purpose of money is not expenditure, it is investment.

Principle 6: Avoid Wasteful Living

What is waste?

• To use or expend resources in an unprofitable, unproductive, and reckless manner, resources that are not coming back and are not bringing anything back.
• Whimsical or capricious purchases. Trigger happy purchases, buying on impulse as soon as money hits the hand.
• The destruction of the worth or value of resources.

The wise do not spend raw money, they invest it and spend out of the profit. A businessman in this church set up a separate company just to generate the profit that pays his staff salaries, so the bulk of his main revenue is preserved for reinvestment and expansion. Do not spend mother money, spend daughter money.

Consequences of wasteful living

1. Wealth is in haste where waste abounds. Money hurries to leave where there is waste, as with the prodigal son Luke 15:13-15.
2. There is wealth hidden inside waste. Jesus multiplied five loaves and two fishes and still said, "Gather up the fragments that remain, let nothing be lost." Twelve baskets were gathered from what looked like nothing.
3. God does not bless wasters. When he sees the footsteps and vibes of a waster, he minimizes his releases into that life.
4. Elimination of waste is the doorway to desirable treasure Proverbs 21:20. There is treasure to be desired in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man spends all of it.

Whatever enhances your worth is an investment into your life and destiny. A chartered accountant is at a higher level than an ordinary accountant in worth and marketability.

Principle 7: Avoid Borrowing and Indebtedness

Deuteronomy 15:6

For the Lord thy God blessed thee as he promised thee, thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow.

Deuteronomy 28:12

The Lord shall open unto you his good treasure... and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

Proverbs 22:7

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Romans 13:8

Owe no man anything, but to love one another.

What borrowing is and does

1. Borrowing is the act of spending money that is not yet in your hands, by obtaining a loan temporarily from a lender.
2. Borrowing is proof of lack of confidence and faith in the supply capacity of God Philippians 4:19: "My God shall supply all your need, according to his riches in glory."
3. Borrowing is proof of lack of financial discipline, wisdom and management. If a good thing is not yet in your hand, it is not good for you yet Psalm 84:11.
4. Borrowing puts life under a perpetual situation of lack and scarcity. No matter how much a borrower has in the bank, he is in lack for as long as he is indebted.

5. Borrowing strips life of honor and dignity. In the eyes of a lender, the borrower is worth nothing.
6. Borrowing affects the quality and durability of life 2 Kings 4:1, where the Shunammite widow's children were nearly taken as collateral for debt.

The way out of borrowing and indebtedness

1. Be determined not to borrow under any condition, even if it means doing the work of a laborer.
2. Be a practitioner of the covenant of supernatural supplies. As long as the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, day and night, summer and winter shall not cease.
3. Be a diligent and determined worker Proverbs 10:4. He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand, but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
4. Be patient with God. Accept your status for now, and grow gradually Ecclesiastes 3:1, Galatians 6:9.
5. Do not compare yourself with others 1 Corinthians 10:12. Do not fall for the pressure to belong or the fear of being left behind.
6. Be content Hebrews 13:5. Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
7. Always find cost effective alternatives to what you want to accomplish.

Illustration

When choosing a school for his first child, the preacher chose the one he could afford, not the most prestigious one, and the child still excelled. A dedicated businessman brought a contract of over 20 billion and started it without a dime of mobilization, because he had vowed never to borrow.

Testimony: Beware of the Debt Trap

A letter shared with the congregation, from someone who has studied Nigeria's debt culture:

The Bible generally advises against borrowing, presenting it as a form of slavery to the lender. Though not explicitly labeled a sin, debt is viewed negatively and believers are urged to seek financial independence and prioritize repaying it.

In practical terms, a business that borrows 1 billion may end up owing 4 billion after ten years once fees and compounded interest are added. One of the richest Nigerians once told Forbes Africa how he nearly took his own life when the market moved against him and his debt ballooned.

Sometimes it is better to have less without debt than to seek more through debt and be trapped by lenders. That money is not free. The interest compounds in ways most people never see when they take the facility.

Testimony: Freedom From Indebtedness

A man testified that his life was peaceful and his businesses were thriving until a friend counseled him to take bank loans to scale up his operations. It looked too good to be true, and he jumped in. Things went well at first, huge projects took off, until the pressure began to pile up and his peace disappeared. Bank officials who were once cautious and accommodating became like tigers once the loan was signed.

By the middle of 2024, he had a divine encounter with Proverbs 22:7, "The rich rules over the poor and the borrower is servant to the lender." He ran to the altar and cried out for deliverance from indebtedness. That same week, after the man of God prayed for him, doors of opportunity opened, resources came in, and by the last quarter of 2024 he had liquidated every loan.

He later discovered through a forensic audit that the bank had illegally debited him to the tune of 1.8 billion in charges beyond the agreed interest. He has since regained his peace and his fellowship with God, and now counsels young people to avoid loans, and to seek investors and part with equity instead.

It is better to own 10% of a thriving business than to own nothing and lose your previous assets too.
