This continues a message on reigning as king in youth, drawing secrets from the life of Joseph. The previous session established four points: never allow anyone to stop or kill your dreams; determine to maintain a positive attitude in all situations; no matter what you lose in life, never lose the presence of God, because his presence remains your greatest asset; and be a source of rest to your generation.

Genesis 39:6-23 records how Potiphar left everything he owned in Joseph's care, and how his wife repeatedly pressed Joseph to sleep with her. Joseph refused, telling her that his master trusted him with everything in the house except her, because she was his wife, and asking how he could do such wickedness and sin against God. When she caught him by his garment one day, he fled, leaving the garment behind, and she used it as false evidence to accuse him before the household and eventually before her husband. Potiphar's wrath was kindled, and Joseph was thrown into the prison where the king's prisoners were kept. But the Lord was with him there, showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the prison keeper, who put him in charge of the other prisoners.

Lessons From What Joseph Suffered for Doing Right

It is better to suffer for doing the right thing than to enjoy doing the wrong thing. It is better to be condemned while standing on the side of right than to be honored while standing on the side of wrong. It is better to lose favor for doing right than to gain favor for doing wrong; Joseph would have gained enormous favor, money, and advantage had he agreed to the relationship, but he chose to lose that favor rather than sacrifice his future for it. It is better to be castigated for doing right than celebrated for doing wrong. It is better to lose friends and relationships for doing right than to gain them by agreeing to do wrong; Joseph lost his standing with Potiphar and the household staff entirely, despite years of trust. The satisfaction of iniquity today is the sacrifice of destiny tomorrow. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego went into the fire because they refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar's gods; Daniel went into the lion's den not for any wrongdoing but because he prayed to the God of heaven. Sometimes people attack you not because you did something wrong, but because you are too devoted, too principled, or unwilling to bow, and what you're protecting in that moment is not your present comfort but your future.

From this comes a threefold counsel. First, never bow to pressure to do evil, no matter who is applying that pressure. Potiphar's wife was powerful and influential, and people often resist pressure from ordinary sources yet bow under pressure from authority or influence; the same kings who pressured Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and Daniel to compromise were resisted regardless of their power, while Samson eventually bowed under repeated pressure from Delilah and lost his hair, his sight, and ultimately his life. Second, never give up your conviction to do right in the face of confrontation, however intense that confrontation becomes. Third, never bow to evil merely for societal acceptance or human approval. You may go through real pain for doing the right thing, but you must end with gain; principled people in the immediate always end as principled people in the ultimate, while unprincipled people end up with nothing lasting. A woman once lost her job because her employer wanted an immoral relationship with her and she refused; years later, applying for a new position that required a reference from that same former employer, she went back with boldness, and he wrote her an extraordinary recommendation, telling the new employer they were dealing with someone who would not compromise her principles. What looked like pain at the beginning became gain in the end.

Letting God Speak for You When No One Else Will

When Potiphar's wife raised her accusation, nobody first went to Joseph to hear his side. The household staff heard only her version, and by the time her husband heard it too, his wrath was already kindled and Joseph was sent straight to prison. Proverbs 18:13 says that he who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him. There are times people will condemn you before ever hearing from you, and being lied against, misrepresented, and judged without a chance to defend yourself is one of the deepest kinds of pain, because the real question becomes: who will believe you?

When you find yourself in that position, unable to speak for yourself and with no one else willing to speak for you, let God speak for you.

1. Maintain a Clear Conscience Before God and Man Acts 24:16

   Paul the apostle said he exercised himself to always have a conscience void of offense toward God and toward man. Whatever else has been said about you, be sure your own conscience is clear.

2. Ask for Mercy From God Where You Were Actually Wrong Proverbs 28:13

   Where you gave room to something, even indirectly, whether through a careless association or an honest mistake rather than deliberate wrongdoing, acknowledge that honestly before God rather than covering it, since scripture says the one who confesses and forsakes their sin finds mercy.

3. Allow God to Speak for You and Judge Your Case Psalm 50:6, Psalm 54:1

   Ask him directly to judge the matter, to dispense judgment righteously, and to prove your innocence where you have no other means of defending yourself. Once God finishes judging a case, both the accuser and the accusation lose their place permanently; they do not follow you for the rest of your life. Nobody produced Potiphar's wife or any court record to challenge Joseph once he stood before Pharaoh as prime minister; what God did was large enough to swallow the accusation entirely, even though the physical evidence, Joseph's garment, was real. Evidence can appear true while the underlying case is false, and one move of God can override even evidence that looks convincing.

While waiting for God's verdict, whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Genesis 40:3 and Genesis 37:36 show that the same Potiphar who imprisoned Joseph was the captain of the guard who later handed him responsibility over other prisoners, including the king's own butler and baker, suggesting that somewhere he suspected the truth even if he could not act on it publicly. When a man's ways please the Lord, even his enemies are eventually made to be at peace with him, and the very people the enemy wants to use against you will still end up needing what you have to offer.

Distracted focus is destroyed future. If the enemy does not know what else to do about your future, he will simply try to distract your focus with accusation, false report, and confrontation. Determine not to lose your focus regardless of what voices rise up against you.
