Reigning Through the Force of Prayer

We can reign by the force of prayer. In Matthew 6:9-10, Jesus said, "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Our objective tonight is to understand ruling and reigning power through prayer.

God has made us kings and priests unto God. 1 Peter 2:9 says, "We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people." Royal priesthood means kings and priests, and kings rule; kings reign.

Three Who Ruled by the Force of Prayer

1. Elijah

   In 1 Kings 17:1, Elijah was practically in charge of the nation of Israel while a king still sat on the throne. He said, "Before God whom I stand, there shall be neither rain nor due except by my word." The force by which Elijah ruled was prayer — James 5:16-17 says the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, and Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, yet he prayed and was in charge of his nation by the force of prayer. It is possible for a king to hold the office while someone else, through prayer, holds the true rule — the reformer John Knox was that kind of man; Mary, Queen of Scots, said she feared his prayers more than an army.

   Daniel

   In Daniel 6:10, when Daniel knew the decree was signed, he went into his house and, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, knelt three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did before. He prayed until the king's decree was altered. By Daniel 6:24-28, King Darius wrote to all nations and languages, "Peace be multiplied unto you," and made a decree that men should tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, "for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever." The king sat on the throne, but Daniel was commanding — he ruled by the force of prayer, and prospered in the reign of Darius and of Cyrus the Persian.

3. Queen Esther

   Esther 4:16 records that when Esther had to approach the king against custom, she said, "Go, gather together all the Jews... and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days... and if I perish, I perish." She prayed until Haman was hanged on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai, until the Jews had power over those who sought to destroy them, and until many among the people of the land became Jews themselves. That was the power of prayer.

   Prayer brings man into alignment with God

   It gives man a stand with God, before God — you come onto the same wavelength as God. Elijah said, "Before God whom I stand..." (1 Kings 17:1). Whenever you stand with God, whatever bows for God will bow for you; you may think it is bowing for you, but it is bowing for the God you are standing with — as when the crowds spread their cloaks on the road before Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the honor was for the master, but the donkey experienced it. That is what is about to happen to you: the honor due your Master is about to be experienced by you.

   • When prayer brings you into alignment with God, when you appear, God appears; when you appear, the hosts of heaven appear with you.

2. Prayer establishes the rule, reign, and dominion of God through man in the earth

   This is what is meant in Matthew 6:9-10: "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven" is not a recitation, it carries revelation. We come to the place of prayer to enforce God's rule, his reign, his dominion, and we rise there with authority to do it.

   • In a crusade in Botswana, during a severe drought, we decreed that rain would fall after we left — and the rain fell so heavily after our departure that it became a flood, and the same region later needed prayer for the rain to be moderated.

   Prayer gives us access to the mind, will, and plan of God

   Isaiah 55:8 says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways." At the place of prayer we access what the Lord wants to do — in John 6:6, before Jesus multiplied the five loaves and two fishes, he himself already knew what he would do. Access to the mind of God is divine wisdom, and through wisdom we reign: Proverbs 8:15-16 says, "By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth."

   • Joseph became ruler in Egypt by the wisdom of God. In Genesis 41:38-40, Pharaoh said, "Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?... there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled."

   Prayer gives you access to wisdom; wisdom gives you access to rulership. You take charge effortlessly.

4. Prayer dismantles the enemy's plots, plans, and devices

   "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever." That is prayer scattering evil. Jeremiah 1:10 says, "I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, and to build, and to plant." At the place of prayer we dismantle the agenda of darkness.

5. Prayer connects man with supernatural power and authority

   In Genesis 32:24-28, Jacob wrestled with the man until the breaking of day and would not let go until he was blessed. When he was asked his name and answered "Jacob," he was told, "Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed." At the place of prayer we connect with power to prevail — you are not a commoner, you are royalty by the power of prayer. When the disciples asked why they could not cast out a devil, Jesus answered that it was because of their unbelief, and that "this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:19-21). There is a dimension of authority you step into only through prayer and fasting.

Testimonies of Authority in Prayer

"One of my children, a newborn under a month old, developed a serious, persistent fever. My wife, who is a doctor, did everything medically possible, but the temperature stayed high. I took the baby and placed her on my chest and prayed for about three hours, generating fire in prayer — fire against fever. By the time the fire had swallowed the fever, I called her mother to come and carry a baby whose temperature had returned to normal."

Even a mad man knows danger, and a drunk man will jump out of the way of an oncoming vehicle faster than a sober one — both recognize danger approaching. In the same way, the enemy recognizes when authority is being exercised against him.

The Secret of Answered Prayer

It is impossible to give the whole secret of answered prayer in a single night, the way it is impossible to summarize the secret of success in one sentence — but here are two keys. The first is a standing relationship with God.
