Isaiah 10:27 is the premise for this teaching: it shall come to pass in that day that his burden shall be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

Most of the time when the yoke is discussed in church, the focus is only on the fact that it must be destroyed. What is often missed is that first it has to be taken off your neck. The yoke is not destroyed while it is still on your neck; it must be removed, and then it can be destroyed.

What A Yoke Actually Is

The Hebrew word for yoke is pronounced simply ol. From the Hebrew perspective, a yoke is a wooden instrument, a wooden bar fastened around the neck of an oxen, and it can also be placed on horses. That piece of wood is used for three things:

• To control
• To regulate
• To direct

A yoke can cause an animal to move in a direction contrary to its own will, against its own wish. One of the things a yoke does is regulate speed. However fast a cow could naturally run, you will never know, because the yoke on its neck limits it. That is why the Bible speaks of not being unequally yoked. An unbeliever, in this sense, is not only someone without faith, but can also be a believer who does not believe in where you are going. The worst thing that can happen to a person is to be married to someone who does not believe in them.

A Partner Can Be A Yoke, Or A Lift

Who you partner with can be your number one yoke. There are men who should have gone much further except for who they married. There are women who should have been at the top of their game except that they married someone who put them in a cage, not a home.

A springboard partner asks how high you want to go and pushes you there. A limiting partner tells you your vision will evaporate like the morning dew before sunrise. The voice that only tells you it isn't possible, that only limits your speed, that only makes you second-guess yourself, is a yoke, however close and however loved.

What The Word "Yoke" Means In Full

The Greek word for yoke is zugos, and it carries the meaning of an instrument of bondage, a coupling instrument, a restraining instrument, an instrument used to exercise pressure, an instrument of domination. It is also an instrument of false or forced submission, where someone submits not because they want to and not because they were taught to, but because they are forced to.

• A yoke cannot exist unless it is connected to something. There is no yoke without a thing yoked to it, and the strength of a yoke lies in what it is connected to.
• A yoke speaks of oppression: captivity, limitation, control, manipulation, enforced struggle.

In summary, a yoke is any tool or device used to control or regulate the movement and direction of a person's life.

Galatians 5:1 says stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Yokes Beyond The Individual

A government can become a yoke on a people. A people with potential, talent, and ability, a nation with mineral wealth and human resource, can be limited, restrained, controlled, and live below its privileges in God, simply because governance itself has become a yoke. Leadership can become a yoke over an entire nation, holding it back from its true potential.

Recognizing A Yoke In Your Own Life

• It is possible to be intelligent, and yet controlled.
• It is possible to be gifted, and yet restricted.
• It is possible to be beautiful, and yet bound.
• It is possible to be rich, and yet still under control in some area of life.
• It is possible to be single, and yet regulated from getting married.
• It is possible to be married, and yet limited in expressing yourself.

It is a yoke that makes hard work produce little result. It is a yoke that makes favor mysteriously disappear. It is a yoke that makes opportunities collapse suddenly. It is a yoke that makes the same battle repeat itself over and over in your life. Many people are not lazy, they are simply yoked. A cow can move fast, but once the yoke is on, the yoke regulates how far and how fast it goes. There are gifted people whose giftedness has become their frustration, wondering how they can carry so much and remain exactly where they are.

The challenge with a yoke is that you cannot see it by looking at someone's face. A beautiful face can be carrying a yoke no one else can see.
