Matthew 5:13 — "you are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its flavor... it is good for nothing." This comes directly after the beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12): poor in spirit, merciful, pure in heart, persecuted for righteousness. Saltiness is character first, influence second. Jesus said this to fishermen, not senators — the kingdom's influence never comes through the powerful first, but through a transformed life.

What Being Salt Is Not

- Not fame or visibility. Salt dissolves unseen; it's tasted, not displayed.

- Not wealth. People already have money without Jesus — the distinctiveness is what the wealth is used for.

- Not dominating people. There's no such thing as "salt soup" — salt serves the dish, it doesn't replace it.

- Not blending into the culture. A saltless disciple is a neutral one — not hot, not cold, no taste.

- Not external morality without inward transformation. Matthew 5:20 — righteousness must exceed the scribes and Pharisees. Avoiding sin out of shame (fear of being caught) is not the same as avoiding it out of love for God.

- Not spiritual gifts alone. A person can prophesy or work miracles without Christlike character — the beatitudes come before the gifting.

Understanding the Times

1 Chronicles 12:32 — the sons of Issachar understood the times and knew what to do. Artificial intelligence is already replacing predictable, repetitive office work. But research shows what machines cannot do: caring for the sick, teaching a child, counseling the hurt, leading people, taking moral responsibility. Machines can process information but cannot love.

The world is discovering that the most valuable future skills are exactly what the church has been called to produce — compassion, integrity, wisdom, presence. Skilled trades also carry real, practical dignity and deserve less condescension, not more.

Work Is Worship

Colossians 3:22-23 — "whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord." The Hebrew word behind "work" (abad) also means worship. Work existed before the Fall and before marriage — it's not a fallen necessity, it's part of design. A life built entirely around escaping work into vacation is a life wired for misery.

The Real Danger: Identity, Not Poverty

Global figures show roughly 1 in 8 people living with a mental health disorder — depression affecting around 280 million, anxiety around 301 million, including 1 in 7 young people aged 10-19. The coming shaking's real danger is identity crisis, not lack of money. Ask someone who they are and they'll tell you what they do — that's not identity, that's function.

Marriage in the Shaking

The first place a shaking touches is family. There's a difference between someone loving you and someone loving the idea of you — the difference shows up when there's nothing left to admire. Comradeship, built through shared hardship, tends to outlast romance alone; couples who suffered together find it harder to walk away from each other. Nine months without work tested this directly — a spouse's steady, unglamorous support through that season is its own kind of proof that the relationship was never built on income in the first place.

Proper Valuation of People

The church is positioned to answer a hungry world's deeper question: what does it mean to be human, made in God's image? That valuation has to show up in how everyone is treated, not only those with visible status. Proverbs 22:3 — "a prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself." Planning ahead, together, as families and as a church, is wisdom, not fear.
